Hi I've just joined and posted in new member area. Just wondered if anyone else has got Ute's. I've got 2 Anoushka and Tokota. Their original lines go back to Siberian Husky, Alaskan Malamute and German Shepherd Dogs. Look forward to chatting to you all. :)

Hi and Thanks everyone for your kind comments.
Utonagan (means Spirit of the Wolf) are bred to look like a wolf but with no wolf content. They are very similar to the Northern Inuit Dogs, and did start out from the same stock. As with alot of breeds people had different ideas of how the breed should look and a separation was made. Northern Inuits are still a very strong and stunning breed here in the UK. My dogs are from Sulin lines one that comes from the original lines. They are quite head strong dogs. They always want to play and are very strong. Anoushka is the one with the white mark on her head. She stands around 25 1/2 inches to her shoulder. Tokota is her younger half brother and stands around 28 inches to the shoulder. Their personalities are opposites. Anoushka would be the first to meet a stranger and want a fuss whereas Tokota is more reserved and would suss them out first. Tokota is fairly easy to train cause he likes his treats!
There is a society website www.utonagan.co.uk (http://www.utonagan.co.uk) and a forum that alot of owners use www.destrucadog.co.uk/forum/ (http://www.destrucadog.co.uk/forum/)
This breed still have a long way to go before they get KC recognision, but I'm so glad I chose them.

Hi and Welcome,
I have heard of these before, and you said there was some split with regard to the NI, as far as I know they are always having problems within their association. : -((
I have a Malamute and he is the softest most placid babe ever, with a stunning face.
I hope you enjoy your time here.

Thanks for all your lovely comments.
Orcainspired I like your Husky. I love the blue eyes - you could get lost stareing into those!:)
Yes Syler there have been splits with the NI's since the Utonagans branched away, but there have also been splits within the Ute's. It does nothing to help both beautiful breeds of dogs. I had wanted a Mal for a long time, but I also like Huskys. We had a GSD before and we lost him when he was 13yrs old due to hip dysplacia. When looking for another dog we literally stumbled across these. All 3 breeds that we liked in one dog, wow. The rest is history...
We live near to Cannock Chase - large area of woodland - they have Husky teams on the Chase and I have been to watch them several times, unfortunately our dogs would be to large to pull a rig :( .

Why would they be too big???
I intend to work Syler when he is 1yr. His height is expected to be anything from 26in to 29in from the shoulder.
Mals work in harness extremely well. Have you been to any rallies, there you will see both sibs and mals in there respective teams. They are a joy to watch.

We were told this from the Husky sledders. I have not been to any rallies as yet, on the Chase they use Huskys.
It would put more strain on their hips. I know that Mals are used to pull sleds, I think they have more muscle as are bred for it. Whether its because of the GSD content in the breed - they are known to suffer from hip problems. I do know of one woman who uses her Utes to pull a rig but can only use around 2 dogs in her team. I am particularly wary as we had a GSD with severe hip displacia :( I also know of someone who uses her Utes in cani-cross and skijoring.

It would really depend on what sort of work you had in mind, if it was springer/ scooter then i can't see why not as their height has nothing to do with it... if pulling then it would depend on the dogs lineage as some lines have bad hips and are not deep chested enough.
I have a friend that has a few Ute's and would be able to help me advise you further if you are interested in working them:D

Thanks for your messages.
Would be interesting to know what my 2 would be able to do. Tokota is very springy so I've been considering agility, just to use some of his pent up energy!!! I don't think Noush would be able to pull, but she loves doin tricks :applaud:

Welcome. Your dogs are stunning. I've never heard of them. I'm sure if they were easily available here my hubby would want one. He loves wolves, we both do, but not as pets.

No unfortunately can't make it :sad-smiley-002: Got a family christening in Weymouth. Sounds like there's a whole pack of Ute's making their way across country to be there though! I will be looking forward to the pictures. There are going to be relations to my 2 there so you'll probably hear me cheering them on from Weymouth.
Hope the weather is ok for the day :)

They must be considered a rare breed ...never seen one before, but they sure are beautiful. Are they used for sled dogs?
Tracii
08-03-2007, 02:13 PM
Thank you
I do know of someone who uses them to pull a sled and a friend who does cani-cross and skijoring with her 2. Syler has a friend who has got Utes they use for sledding.
I suppose they are rare, they are mainly bred in the UK and are not KC recognised. We have a forum where everyone who wants can keep in touch and share stories etc. Its a nice family to have.

Yes they are classed as rare (both NI's and Utes) but seem to becoming more and more popular by the day.
