 My little girl is a new mom. She started out great but now she doesn't want to sleep with the pups and doesn't seem to want to feed them. They are only 23 days old and I just don't know what to do. I have cut the nails and she has plenty of milk. She is a pom. Could it be she is just to hot to sleep with them? She runs to them if they cry and cleans them but just will not stay to long to feed them. Her tits are not hard or red. Does anyone have any idea's?

Are they hungry? Surely they would cry if they were in which case she would run to them.....
Maybe she's naturally cutting down on the amount of milk they have?
I've never had pups so can't really help - but it's always worth giving the vet a ring just to be sure.
Good Luck!

Hi its natural at that age for the mum to stay in with them less and less now.
Im assuming you have started to wean them off of her now??????. She will still stimulate them after a feed.

They don't have any teeth yet. Do I start to offer pup food mush still? Sorry for sounding so dumb. I have not had any pups since I was a little girl.

Yes they need to be in the first stage of weaning off now. They don't need teeth to eat. Something mushy .
weetabix and milk. Scrambled egg and milk. etc

You are too... cool!!! Thank you.
Hey just another funny little question. My girl talks to pups,LOL. If one gets to far away or start to cry she will cry back at them. LOL..... She is so cute.... Have you ever heard of such a thing?

You can make a milk replacement by combining a can of condensed milk, a raw egg and 1 tablespoon of caro syrup. Blend a good puppy kibble in the blender or food processor until it's just crumbs and stir a little into the milk mixture. Gradually decrease the milk and increase the amount of crumbs and eventually the size of the crumbs until they are eating the dry kibbles.

i was always advised against giving raw eggs to pups or do you heat the mixture up?.

Unless the immune system is compromised for some reason raw eggs are fine. Only serve at room temperature or puppy body temperature. No warmer or colder.

I have started the pups on Just Born Milk with dry pup food mix. It is mostly milk to start. They seem to be doing okay. I wish it were better. I worry they just aren't getting enouph. Mom is still feeding them a little but not much. I dropped my camera in the lake or I would send some more pics. Thank you for the advice. ttyl

Everything sounds normal in my humble opinion, as you would know if something was wrong by the frantic or nervous actions of mom. When ma is away put down a flat dish of warmed goats milk, put some on your finger to let them taste. Try and give them a feed just before ma goes to them. You might try drying momma dog too, by only feeding dry kibble to her.
Another invaluable tip is to have them in a puppy pen where you can divide it into two sections. One side is where they sleep, so put flat newspaper and perhaps a blanket...then a divider so they have to step or climb over,(eg:a 2x4) and on the other side put newspaper that is torn into thin strips.
This is a lifesaver, as the newspaper stops their feces from getting everywhere from them playing, cuts down the smell and mess.
Hope this is a little help

I'm not sure if you have it wherever you are, but in the uk we have Lactol.. mush up warm mince meat (raw, but warmed in microwave until a little warmer than you want it- the lactol cools it greatly) and add Lactol by the reccomendations on the tin... but if they're this old now it may just be not worth it, as other things will suffice.
Anyway, to make it clearer, if you're going to do this;
Heat a bit of mince meat in the microwave, just warmer than you want it.
Create Lactol formula, mix with the mince meat, so it is a horrible mincey milky mess. Make sure it is not too hot, serve in a nice big dish or individual ones :D
