Dairy Milk

I'm new to the puppy business, i have had a puppy before it was more a family dog and didn't attach to me. But the new puppy seems to be more mine then anyones.

I was wondering at what age are you meant to stop feeding the puppies cows milk? - we do use semi-skinned.

It's on of the only things she'll eat mixed with baby rice.

how old is this pup? and why is she eating milk at all, dogs, and cats for that matter, should no have cows milk, if you need to supplement because they are young then you need either the puppy milk replacer or goats milk in a pinch, but never cows milk.

I agree with the above. Also, puppies usually wean between 6 to 8 weeks I believe...

The puppy is small, she is either 6 weeks and the right size or 8 weeks and small.

We got her from a friend who originally got her from a some irish gypsies at a horse fare, as far as i know she didn't ask anything about it, like how old it is and what it eats. She took it home and her husband didn't like it, and aparrently it wasn't eating and whinned all the time - she kept it in one of the dog holders. She then tried to give it to a friend and after being let run off the house for a wek and a half she was given back with the comments she doesn't eat and cry all the time.

So we took her and she is fine... she little but is now eating chicken. We did give her about 3/4 of a mug full of milk with baby rice at first. Other people I know have used it and not had problems - but i wasn't entirely sure.

We don't think she was just taken straight off her mum without being weened. She is the runt. and hasn't grown in the 2 weeks since she was first bought.

She is now getting some shape.

The good thing about any of this is that the pup may be 6 weeks and thus you can provide it it's meals. The baby mix is good but without the cows milk but rather goats milk as said above. My mix (beginning the wean) would be baby cereal and warm water with goats milk offered at evening time.

At 6 weeks is a perfect age for weaning, a plus for the puppy. I would already have the pup eating a good dry puppy food and lots of water.

The bad part of any of this is if the pup is 6 weeks and taken away from the litter and mama, you more than likely will have a pup with a behavior prblem. The puppy needed the stay with litter and mama until at least 8 weeks for it to develop good social skills.

The not eating and crying may be due to the needed direction from mama and the companionship of it's sibblings. Let us hope the best for this puppy.

Had her a week now, at the moment she seems to be fine behaviour wise, and she is house training really fast - more than i can say for how long it took our 7year old springer too.

She also seems to be very involved with people - likes the company which is why if she was in a dog hold then she would cry, theres a lack of company. But she hasn't done with us and she eats alot of chicken; so she has started to grow, now we can get her to slowly eat other foods as well i think she will be ok.

Her temperament will be affected by what her parent's temperaments are and how she is raised. She won't necessarly have behavior problems just because of the age she left her mother. Social skills deveolped with people in a positive atmosphere is what is crucial at this point.

As already touched on, cow's milk is terrible for puppies as they simply cannot digest it. That might be the reason she had shown little signs of growth. It's just like how our stomachs cannot digest hay and so if we eat it, we really aren't getting any food value and we'll still need more food, even if we were to get full on hay. Our digestive tracts just don't take anything out of it; They're not made to. You can get goat's milk from the cooking isle of most grocery stores. That and canned puppy food like Pedigree Puppy would be a wonderful diet. Puppies really need a puppy's diet to grow healthy. Their digestive systems are literally set up different than ours and processed people food isn't really good for them, either.

we have managed to get her onto puppy food now, as her appatite was better. But the weeks she didn't grow was the two wekks before we had got her, when the people where feeding her when she was hungry, but where she would have had a small stomach she wasnt hunrgy. But she must have almost doubled in size now. as she was about a kilo when we got her a fortnight ago and in a week and a bit she is now 1.6 kilos :) and no more worms :D .

Looks like she is coming on now. I would agree no cow's milk if you have to give milk then Goat's milk. You could try some Pedigree Puppy Porridge which is really good for puppies. I am not a fan of Pedigree normally but the Puppy Porridge just as a little extra to build her up. Anyhow good luck with her and do post and let us know how she gets on.
