There is a purebred Border Collie in Scottsville, Kentucky, who will have puppies any day now.
The pound will not let her come to Canada, and we could take her NOW.
Instead, they are going to spay her, which will kill the babies. And then they are going to kill her.
Tomorrow.
CAN ANYONE HELP? SOMEONE NEEDS TO HELP LOCALLY!
PLEASE!

That is Sad! If I still lived in KY, and had the space, I would take in that poor girl! :-(

That is so sad. But, they're not going to spay her one day & then euthanize her tomorrow. There would be no sense in that.

I hope somebody can rescue this poor girl.

That doesn't make any sense! Why would they spay her first if they're just going to kill her and the puppies?

I'm not sure. I am just cross posting this from a volunteer who works with a border collie rescue in Canada.

Hi all. I am a part of the rescue that was supposed to be bringing her up this weekend. The head of our rescue recently updated us today. This was her message:

I have just spoken to the warden at the Allen facility in Scottsville KY.
They will NOT let Daisy go out pregnant, and YES she is pregnant.
They said she is due anytime, and they want to kill her babies. They said I can only have her if she is spayed, and that will be Monday. Monday it is too late for my transport.
I BEGGED and I PLEADED. I cried my eyes out and told them the babies would be in Canada, and spayed and neutered...
Now the worst part of this?
If nobody speaks for her today, she dies tomorrow. This is the most obscene and horrible thing I have heard of. Trouble is, if we anger them off with calls, they will shut down to rescue even worse.
I have to say, I have never dealt with such callousness in my life.
CAN ANYONE ELSE SAVE THIS DOG??? VICTORIA??? Can you save her???
Everyone on my transport list was willing to take her along at risk of her giving birth, just to save them all. Now we might lose her too.

I hope this clears things up. I am sorry if my message was garbled, but I am so upset over this.

Hi Jessica! Welcome to the forum. I wish I could help but there's not much that can be done. If they do spay her, they will likely be putting her up for adoption. I know that's not the answer you were looking for & I'm sorry for that.

Well, it's inevitable. I just got word that they are going to kill the puppies. They're murderers.

They are not the murderers. They're the ones that have the dirty job of cleaning up the mess left behind by the thousands and thousands of careless individuals that are producing all these unwanted dogs and placing them in irresponsible hands. Those are the real murderers!

It doesn't do a bit of good to save the lives of unborn puppies and ship them off to another country with it's own overpopulation problem while thousands and thousands of wonderful pets are being put to death in shelters every day. It's only compounding the problem across the borders.

Someone, somewhere has to come up with a realistic approach to this tragic situation or the needless deaths and suffering will never stop.

We are FULLY capable of taking care of a mother dog and her babies. Just as the rescue who may be taking in Momma. But they shelter is making the decision to kill the babies. Which is something I disagree with COMPLETELY.

Jessica as I'm sure you know, the way these things work is that whoever has possession of the dog gets to decide the fate of the dog. This is no different from how rescues operate by the way. They decide who may or may not adopt for example, regardless of whether people who argue about these things agree with their decisions or not.
In this case it is the shelter's responsiblity and decision. Yes it is extremely sad, but arguing over whether the shelter should change their rules to accomodate the time frame of the rescue is evidenlty something they are not willing to do.

I sincerely hope that someone steps up to save the dog, since every one who dies is a tragedy. But namecalling won't solve anything.

Sadly alot of people breed for money and leave many places with situations like this. Best way to curb it is to explain/show people that breeding purely for profit is both wrong and against the betterment of the welfare of animals. And if you do have the time and effort adopt a shelter animal :) nothing is more rewarding than giving someone/something a second chance and watching them flourish because of it.

Jessica if you would like I am close enough to pull her ( I am in Va) and I will board her here free of charge until you can arrange transport for her. Let me know~ Caroline & Critters

Am I understanding correctly? Is she in a rescue or a shelter? Either way the pups were obviously "not wanted" and transport for a pregnant mom would not be the best thing for her. I understand that you would love to take the mom and pups but transportation that type of distance would cause a great strain on a pregnant bitch. Keep in mind that if it is a rescue then they only have the best intentions for the dog and a lot of them do not adopt outside of their driving rage so as to keep tabs on all of the dogs that are adopted so that if anything happens they can take them back.I'm sure they are not being mean and not letting you adopt but looking after the long term welfare of the dog. I can't speak on the potential pups that she might have but IMO it's best that she is spayed before going anywhere instead of giving birth to more pups that could very well end up in a shelter in the exact same situation that their mother was. Oh and caroline you and your rescue seem to do some most wonderfull things and I aspire to be able to do as much as you someday!

Ty Julia as I understood Jessicas post the mom doesnt have rescue and does need to be spayed. If that is the case she can be spayed in Ky recouperate here and then transported ( I may have an offer to fly her but I am not sure yet)
