First I want to Welcome you to the Dog Forum and hope you stay and enjoy us all here now. We have fun but help also.
I love those dogs, I could never keep up with the cuts, combings, etc. How nice that you show you can teach me. I have 7 adults West German Shepherds. I import from mostly Germany. I am elderly so I do not compete, but breed Pet Quality puppies to good homes.

Hi from a long time fellow standard lover although for the past 20 years I have only kept one at a time who's sole job is to be my companion.

If you don't mind, I'd like to tell you about my new baby.

Three months ago I lost my beloved best friend, a beautiful black male, yours looks so much like him in the face it brought tears to my eyes.

After a period of mourning I discovered I just couldn't live without a standard in my life and started looking for another black male. I wasn't having much luck, but two weeks ago on a sleepless night, I decided to torture myself again and looked on pet finder. There was a new listing at a pound over 2 hours from me. There was no pic or discription, all it said was a young male standard poodle that was an owner turn in for chewing everything in sight.

After a long drive you can't imagine my dismay to find a 7 month old, very scared, very neglected, very sick, bag of bones and a parti color to boot. Sure a far cry from the healthy black male I was looking for. Of course I took him home, lol.

The past two weeks haven't been easy. First there were his medical issues to tend to, had him to the vet the very next day. Won't go into details, but everything wrong with him was curable and although they would have been minor things if taken care of properly, they had escalated to the point of the dog being just days short of dead so are now taking a while to clear up. But we are getting there and he's pretty much cured.

Issues from his neglect are taking a bit longer. First off, there is no doubt in my mind that he has been beat, not just a little, enough so the vet found evidence of it, I'm just glad she has known me for 20 years and knows I would never do that. Plus it also showed in his general attitude. It broke my heart to see a standard puppy so afraid to place a foot wrong, I can't even begin to tell you the mental state he was in.

But things are looking up, he's almost convinced that I am not going to beat him and that he is actually allowed to be a puppy. He's slowly learning to be the social butterfly that standard are by nature, although he still needs to learn social manners. It's still rough since what he should have learned as a 8 week old puppy he is now having to learn as a large 7 month old puppy and my poor house and body are showing the effects. But still, he is a standard, thus highly intelligent and social by nature and we are getting there, he's even starting to test his boundries with me, a good sign, it means that his abuse hadn't totally broken his spirit.

In short, while he's not even near what I wanted, I'm in love and he's home. I'm starting to think that fate made it so hard for me to find my black male because I was meant to wait for this one, he needed me as much as I needed him.

I don't know the general attitude about parti colors in Australia but here in the states they are just starting to be the in color for poodles, but not akc showable, registrable, but not showable. UKC does accept them, but I'm afraid I'm a bit old school, go with the akc thing about poodles being a solid color and I've always considered blacks as being the best. It's taking me a while to get over him being a parti color, I swore I would never have one. But how could I leave him sitting at a pound? And at least I do have the consilation that his face is almost all black and he does have a gorgeous standard face, lol.

Thanks for listening and tell me more about your standards.

Hi, welcome to the forum. I love your poodle, such a beauty. I also could never keep up with the grooming, Had a friend with a standard poodle who used to do obedience with us, was that poodle smart...and funny...a clown when he felt like it.

barbiespoodle my apologies that I am just reading this now. My heart is breaking to read about how this baby came into the world and what he experienced before he came into your loving and knowlegdable home. I can relate a little as I have been blessed with a girl who was used to breed in a puppymill and they have hard time learning how to be a family pet. But once they figure it out they show you their gratitude each and every day in a million ways. Bless you for taking on this parti boy, he sounds to lucky that you were the angel chosen to give him a second chance. :)

Skunkstripe, sorry it's taken me so long to reply, been busy here between work, the farm and of course, Chewie the standard poodles recovery.

Thank you for your kind words but I don't see how what I'm having to go through with Chewie can compare to what you had to go through to make your girl a member of your family. Thing is, while Chewie was in pretty bad shape, he's only 7 months old so young enough to rebound quickly. Your girl on the other hand had to be older since she was used for breeding so had more to overcome, bless your heart and hers. Is she one of the dog in your pic? If so, which one?

This is Chewie looking a whole lot better than when I got him.

Hi barbiespoodle, thanks for your kind words. The former puppymill momma is the red dog in my avatar and sigpic.
Chewie looks like he has indeed made a full recovery and is not a very happy and pampaered looking dog!

Skunkstripe, awww, she's a cutie to say the least, well both of your dogs are, but I'm afraid I root for the underdog, I'm just glad she had a happy ending.

Plus I have kind of a soft spot for goldens, both me and the vet have always figured my old dog is a mixture of chow and golden, being a pound puppy I picked up at 6 weeks of age, I'm just going by looks and attitude, will never know for sure. Can't say it's the best of crosses, beautiful dog, but with the bullheadedness of a chow and the intelligence of the golden, not an easy dog to live with to say the least. I'll never claim she's a good dog, would have been a real problem for most pet owners, she was even kicked out of obedience school, some silly rule about not eating other students,. But seeing as that I've had her 15 years now, I guess I'll keep her a bit longer, lol.

LMAO cerulean, yea, Chewie can get gassy too.

Welcome, nice to have another standard person here. Any pics? I'm a bit partical to the blacks first and creams second since most creams come out of blacks.

How I wish I had a Standard Poodle... I would give anything!!! I have always loved them, but the grooming is much too much and they just do not fit my lifestyle. What a beautiful dog you have! That dog has class!
Oh well, I have to go now because my dog is whining to go out!

I adore Poodles and have always been owned by one until along came Jake - I would give another poodle a home in a heartbeat. I don't mind clipping because I just give my dogs the 'lamp clip'. My IWS needs clipping too so I'm destined to have a dog that needs clipping

bcody, do you have any pics of your standard?

I was looking for another black male when I happened on Chewie. I actually swore I would never have a parti, I'm old school AKC and PCA, and unfortunally too many parti's are what is refered to as designer breeds, breed only for color and not health or confirmation. Chewie was strictly a thing of the heart, I found him as a very sick and abused 7 month old puppy. I was lucky in that he actually has pretty good confirmation, I would even consider him finishable if he was able to be shown, but not much more than finishable, sure not a male I would use for breeding. And his heath problems were from neglect and not poor breeding, there are a number of parti breeders that do put a lot of effort into producing heathy dogs since they think parti's should be AKC showable, after all, the orginal poodles are parti's, they do have a point there.

Anyhow, I have a thing for black males, I'd love to see some pics of yours. My last two standards were black males, both I loved, but it was my last one that, as a friend said, was my doggy soulmate. When I lose him, I lose a huge piece of me. I'm going to make a memorial garden to him. I have a beautiful stepping stone my best friend had custom made for me years ago with his image and name, one I plan to make with his collar and name tag and put them under one of my hosta sports I named after him, Mr. Monet. Not an unusual enough of a sport to actually register with the American Hosta Society, although I could, just one I'll keep all to myself with his name.

my Mr. Monet, the best dog that ever was born, or at least the best dog for me.

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a248/mamaturkey/monet.jpg

And Master Chewie in his big boy trim, he only just turned a year so I took him out of the puppy cut and into a more managable trim. Now I just have to convince him that he's a big boy and needs to start acting like one, he's sure a knuckle head.

I will try to post some pictures of Tex. I will have to figure out how to do it on here! I was wondering if that was the case with the parties, color being more important to health, but they look so neat! Tex is awesome, still in a puppy clip, it is so easy to take care of.

Bcody, as I said, there are a lot of parti breeders who do take the parties very serious and work to keep them healthy. I was just trying to forwarn you about the ones who do not, but I guess that goes every breed. If you do decide to get a parti, just do the research, there are lots of healthy ones out there.

As far as posting pics, get a photobucket account, it's free and will allow you to post pics about anywhere you can post pics, gives you several options on your pics, for this forum, you use the image code, just copy and paste. That's what many of us use.

I had a st poodle for 15 years, her name was Tara, and she was beautiful, loving, and loyal.
When she died i thought having another poodle would seem as though i was trying to replace her,so i went for a different breed and got Wilma, giant schnauzer and i love her to bits , but have got the poodle bug and there will be one in the future:)

Barbiespoodle, what a wonderful story about Chewie! And Chewie, I hope you don't mind when I say I think you are just a beautiful boy. You look happy and healthy in the signature photo. I hope you get to have a lot of fun learning to be a big guy. You have already taught me a lot about the poodle. Plus, the photos your mom has posted make me do this --> :D
