I just bought a new collie, Cali, and I'm running into trouble on what to feed her. She gets sick sometimes after she eats or acts like she doesn't feel well...she's always so active but a lot of times after she eats, she vomits or lays around. I don't know if it is what i'm feeding her? I've been told to avoid by-products. What is a by-product? It kinda sounds gross but how do i know if its the food I'm giving her? I don't let her have human food so i know its not that. What kind of food doens't have By-Products and where can i get it? And I've been told to also avoid corn because its hard to digest? is there a food with no by-products AND corn? help me and Cali! Thanks!

to my understanding it is basically all the leftover "junk" from an animal that basically isn't approved for human consumption...fats, wastes, etc

AAFCO: Consists of the dry, ground, rendered, clean parts of the carcass of slaughtered chicken, such as necks, feet, undeveloped eggs, and intestines -- exclusive of feathers except in such amounts as might occur unavoidably in good processing practices.

Editorial: Chicken byproducts are much less expensive and less digestible than the chicken muscle meat. The ingredients of each batch can vary drastically in ingredients (heads, feet, bones etc.) as well as quality, thus the nutritional value is also not consistent. Don't forget that byproducts consist of any parts of the animal OTHER than meat. If there is any use for any part of the animal that brings more profit than selling it as "byproduct", rest assured it will appear in such a product rather than in the "byproduct" dumpster.

Thanks guys! (and Congrats lynn on being a "grandmother!") I just started the switch to a new food. My vet recommended Lassie Natural Way. it's a new line of dog food with no byproducts or corn or other "bad stuff"..as my vet put it very bluntly for me. ha.

PS...if you're interested...there is a photo contest that I came across when i was at the lassie website. www.lassie.com/naturalway/ Its called my pet my pal or something like that. I'll be entering Cali so y'all can see a picture! Thanks again!
