My dog has an embarassing problem

Can anyone help me with my dogs problem. I have looked everywhere for information on this with no luck.

He is 8 years old and has a green sticky substance that drips on to the carpet from his penis all the time, and when he shakes it goes everywhere on the walls etc. It is extremely hard to wash off the walls as it dries really hard. I have asked the vets but they say it is normal for a dog but no other male dog that I know has this problem. He has had it for a long time now.

I would be really grateful if anyone has any idea what this is and more importantly if there is a cure.

i would ask your vet to take a swab of the discharge and send it off to a lab to rule out infection

Smegma is something all us mammals are endowed with. There's really nothing you can do about it...only be concerned if it takes on a rather foul odor or takes on a reddish or brown color (evidence of blood). Ask your vet about it, though...producing abundant amounts is rather abnormal and may be a sign of a dietary inbalance or a physical problem like myasthenia (unlikely).

Do either his penis or sheath show signs of inflamation? Does he show his genitals a lot of attention (licking, etc)?

I asked Zoe to ask if he was fixed or not, but that really is inconsequential...what you describe didn't ring any bells until a few moments ago.

There is relevance to the question "is he fixed".

We have a labrador and retriever and prior to their castration we had this issue (pardon the pun :o ) to a much greater extent. Castration, whilst drastic, does severely reduce this problem. FYI, we didn't castrate them for this reason, but because they were being overly aggressive and territorial.

I found that with glass surfaces, scraping with a razor blade is far more effective than any cleaning fluids. It's something owners of certain dogs have to live with but maybe better than having a bitch and risking blood on your carpet!!

There's a difference between smegma and ejaculation...the two aren't really related (ejaculation could make the smount of smegma appear abnormalm, though).

Thanks for all your replies. We have not had him fixed as he has never caused any trouble in that way (ie chasing female dogs, getting personal with our legs etc). His penis is not inflamed and he does not lick or show any irritation in that area. I've been told that candida (yeast) can cause alot of problems, I have to look into it some more and the suggestions that you have made. Thank you again for all your replies.

Just one thing Deana: All dogs should be fixed even if they don't chase females, ect, unless they will be used for purebred breeding. There are already too many dogs in the world. Please fix him! :)

You know he needs tobe checked. He could have an infection or prostrate problems, as dogs age especially unaltered ones, their prostrate also swells with age, and can turn to cancer.
