View Full Version : Dog mange
I have a female GSP which has developed bald patches on her toes, wrists, ankles and one patch on her bum over a few years. these patches specially on her feet can become raw after exercise in grass fields etc.
the vet always dismissed these sores as pressure points i.e. where the dog was lying down etc... about 4 mts ago she her hair started to fall out on her neck & nose and had a rank smell....vet diagnosied scaroptic mange and included the sores on her feet..
now since that she's had 3 courses of anti biotics & I've been treating her with "stronghold" spot on once a mth, dipping her sores some sort of dip which I need to dilute and washing her with an anti-fungle shampoo twice a week the smell has gone and her neck has healed but she still has these sores on her feet & legs.
does anyone know how to cure these sores???

I personally love tea tree ointment for the dogs. Some people say it's toxic but I'm fairly sure that's the neat oil. Anyway, I use it all the time on them and haven't had any problems.
It's a brilliant anti-fungal and also has a slight menthol cooling effect, you could try using that in addition to the vet products?
Does she chew or lick at them?
Although I don't see her lick them I'm sure she does cause the ones she gets at are worse than the ones she can't reach...
what is the product name of the tea tree stuff?

I don't go by product name for the cream - your local pharmacy or health food shop should supply? It's just a ointment or cream with tea tree at about 1-2%, depends what they have in and at what price ;)
If her feet get really bad because she's licking, you can get Mikki boots (stick that into Google and you'll find them no probs). But the tea tree will also put her off licking - shouldn't imagine it tastes very nice

hi has your vet done anymore skin scrapes? i would get him to do some again cos the mange can live for a long time! i am a vet nurse and have seen demidect and scarpotic mange really bad! it can take a long time to cure and you really need to be doing weekly skin scrapes to check how many mites are still alive!it usually takes a good 3-6months to get on top of it
my vet never actually took a skin scraping in the first place.
I have been instructed to apply "stronghold" (which is a spot on treatment) between the dogs shoulder blades every 4 weeks. I believe the active idgrediant in this is ivermecin or something like that. as well as wash her in anti-fungal shampoo..
for the best part of it, it has cleared but she still has these small spots aout the size of a fifty pence piece on her elbows and feet which are bald and crusty.
I don't have much faith in any of my local vets, so if there's any advice you can give please do.

CHANGE YOUR VET!!!!
If you don't have faith in them, then don't give them your business. I travel 8miles to my vet rather than use the more local ones.
You'd ask for a 2nd opinion for yourself if you weren't happy - do it for your dog too :)
my local vets is 8miles away. over the years i've been round most of the vets in my local area (rual area 15mile radius)
the start out great when they just open then service seems to go down hill once they have enough business.....
anyhow guess I will keep pestering them till they get it sorted or I end up broke.

Hmmm. In that case - give 'em hell!!!
Best of Luck, but don't let them get away with it ;)

i agree with mrs rottie change your vet,you are paying them for a service and if you are not happy with it then you need to find alternative treatment! we use advocate for mange because it kills both types,
sorry, "advocate " that's the stuff I'm using .....what did I say before?????
my heads away with it.
in farness my vets are good, it's just my frustration in this taking so long to cure....

For all the world to me it sounds like what my vet calls "red mange mites" and that takes a different treatment. Scrapings should have been done to determine EXACTLY which type of mange--if it is mange indeed. My Hunter and KayCee both had that red mange mites, not bad, but bad enough, when they wre 10 weeks old and I had to give them a dose of --for the life of me I can't recall what it is called, but am thinking it is a cattle wormer-- every day for like 60 days. They were fine after that, no mites found since and this was 6 1/2 years ago.
