Has anybody ever heard of a dog going into a state of "hibernation"? I haven't. I wonder if that explanation for how the dog survived is a bit of editorial license on the part of the writer.

Dog survives nine days in car trunk (http://www.upi.com/NewsTrack/Quirks/2007/11/06/dog_survives_nine_days_in_car_trunk/4247/)

A border collie in England (http://www.upi.com/NewsTrack/Quirks/2007/11/06/dog_survives_nine_days_in_car_trunk/4247/#) may redefine "dog tired" after surviving nine days in a car trunk by going into a type of hibernation.

Tamer Jones, who owned Gale, all but gave up hope of finding the dog after it disappeared from her farm in Fylingthorpe, the Daily Mail reported Tuesday.

It turns out Gale was well hidden in the trunk of a neighbor who does odd jobs around her place, Jones said. The dog, afraid of loud noises, jumped into the trunk when startled by a low-flying airplane.

The dog survived for nine days while the man left for a vacation in London (http://www.upi.com/NewsTrack/Quirks/2007/11/06/dog_survives_nine_days_in_car_trunk/4247/#). The man found Gale when he cleaned the trunk and contacted Jones.

I don't think they really hibernate, but there have been amazing stories of dogs left on their own. Poor dog though! Nine days! I'm surprised he didn't bark or yelp to be let out :(

Yeah, I think the writer used a bit of editorial license to explain the 9 day survival. Dogs & cats have survived longer than that without food/water. I'm sure the poor dog was in rough shape but I dont think hibernation had anything to do with it.

I guess I've become a hard core sceptic but I don't buy this story. I don't buy it even though I do believe that under certain circumstances dogs will (sort of) put themselves into hibernation. But it's doubtful that they can do it for 9 days straight!

In the wild, wolves don't hunt in storms. They den up until the storms are over, even if they last a few days. In a similar situaltion many dogs that are locked up in crates all day do manage to adjust and just sleep. When there's several rainy days in a row many dogs will run outside to pee and poo and come back in and lie around rather than brave the mud and muck. But I seriously doubt that any dog can hibernate (sleep) for nine days straight!

Secondly, If the owners knew for a fact that the dog jumped into the trunk when scared by a low flying aircraft why, wouldn't they have looked there in the first place? And why in the heck wouldn't the dog have barked and whined whenever there were sounds of human activity around the car?

I believe the dog could have been missing; but I don't believe it was in the trunk of a car for 9 days!

Makes a good story though!:D

I thought that was a rather creative explanation for it too but there might have been a plane on that given day that spooked him. I just share 'em, I don't necessarily believe 'em.

Wow thats an amazing story. I've never heard of a dog going into hibernation but I suppose they must do if the vet said it. I've heard of stories like this one about cats, but never a dog. Good for Gale that she's free again!

But it said the owner of the car went on a vacation for the 9 days. So no one would have been around to hear a dog bark. Espeacially since it says that they(the dogs owners lived on a farm) I would assume that the owner of the car also lived out int he country where neighboors may have been to far to hear anything.

I missed the part that they were gone on vacation. But even so, on a farm there would surely have to be someone around to take care of the animals while they were gone.

I've heard stories of various living creatures doing this sort of thing (including people - http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/6197339.stm).

The body goes into a state where it is barely alive in order to survive but it's almost an instinctive natural phenomenon.

Nature can be rather amazing sometimes.
