Or should I say what?!

We had an American visitor come to see our house the other day, a true Texan type complete with the hat and boots, a welcome change from the locals I can assure you! :D

Anyways, he saw Nala and said she looked like a Prairie Dog. So, I looked up on the net, and all I could find were gopher looking creatures, except for this one pic, which is apparently an Indian Prairie Dog ...

So, what do you think? Is the above pic a Prairie Dog, or are they gophers after all?!!

In certain poses, Nala does look a bit like the pic above - her ears are amazing .... they can go forward, upright, back and stick out at right angles too!! :D

Anyone got any ideas on what's in my Nala's mix?! I know she's got some Bulgarian Shepherd Dog (Karakachan) in there as she has a real thick neck and a fluffy bottom!! :)

Not sure what your Texas friend meant by "Prairie Dogs." Nala is a wonderful looking dog and looks like she might be the "ultimate mutt." If you were to let all possible breeds of dogs mate and let their offspring mate and so on, eventually you would get a medium sized brownish dog with white spots, a curly tail and erect ears. There was a National Geographic special on that years ago. So I suspect that Nala's heritage will remain a mystery. :)

Just had to look up smooth collie Katz ... :)

I totally know what you're saying Skunkstripe, although it's her ears that are 'foxing' me!

I don't know anything about dog breeds really, just labs and goldens etc, although I have been studying the dogs around here, and I would say virtually all the dogs here have ears like Harry i.e. smallish in comparison to face and soft/bent down.

Nala's on the other hand, are huge in comparison to her face, and have all sorts of positions!! Here's another classic ear pic of Nala (although pic quality not so good!!) .... her ears really are quite comical :D

Maybe some kind of shepherd? She's gorgeous whatever she is. :)

Thanks....I think she's gorgeous but then I'm her mum so I'm biaised! :D

Yes, I'm sure there's Bulgarian Shepherd in there, as she has some bits like Harry (although they have small floppy ears).

Do you mean like German Shepherd Xcolbi? cos I was kinda wondering if that might be where her ears came from!! :D

She certainly has some strong German Shepherds traits along with maybe some kind of Terrier because of the shorter nose and light color compared to the purebred Shepherd.
SHe sure is cute no matter the mix and I would be most happy with her. I had a mix I rescued at our local shelter many years back, they told me she was shepherd n Huskey. Well huskey yes, her tail held up and curled above the back some, but no shepherd, her coat was thick, matted easily as then I was into horses more so. She was sweet and lived near 17 yrs till we had to PTS. Sad day. I really like Nala.:p:)

Cool! :) That would make sense ..... I did wonder if her slim face had some terrier in her, and her ears German Shepherd ...... it's hard for me tho as I don't know many breeds!!

Thanks for the compliments everyone!! She is a cutie....personality as well as looks, daft too! :p
