A DUDLEY man, "who considers himself as an animal lover", has been jailed for carrying out a "brutal and prolonged attack" on his Staffordshire bull terrier puppy.
Magistrates handed ********, of Stone Street, an eight-week custodial sentence to run consecutively with a 13-month sentence he is currently serving.
He was also banned from keeping animals for five years and ordered to sign over his dog to the RSPCA for rehoming.
Dudley Magistrates heard on Friday November 16, how police had received four calls from distressed members of the public, who watched ****** carry out the brutal attack on his defenceless dog.
He was witnessed throwing, kicking, punching and dragging six-and-a-half-month old Max near Dudley town centre on May 2.
RSPCA Prosecutor Nick Sutton read out statements from witnesses who watched as the defendant carried out the 15 minute attack.
****** was seen in Hall Street, picking up the black bull terrier in his arms before throwing him onto the floor with force.
Witnesses who were driving past the defendant, watched in horror as the dog lay flat on the floor, not moving.
They were so concerned they diverted their journeys to follow 44-year-old ******* He was walking with the dog in his arms, before placing him on the floor again, punching and kicking the puppy in the stomach "three or four times, like he was kicking a football."
Witnesses described how the defendant looked drunk as he staggered around, dragging the dog.
Police officers found ****** at his mum's house in Shirley Road, where "he was drunk and completely out of it asleep".
The dog was found distressed and shaking. He was in pain and unable to stand on his back legs. Vets treated the dog for soft tissue damage and bruising and he has now made a full recovery.
Simon Hanns, defending told the court, ****** could not remember what he had done that night. He was drunk and the attack was a one-off incident and apart from the injuries sustained from the attack, the puppy was in good health.
Magistrates handed *********, of Stone Street, an eight-week custodial sentence to run consecutively with a 13-month sentence he is currently serving.
He was also banned from keeping animals for five years and ordered to sign over his dog to the RSPCA for rehoming.
