Hi guys,
i was looking at this website and came across some interesting information about how much the GSD's back has sloped over the last 60 years or so, if you look at the link, (which does take a couple of minutes to load unfortunately, not sure if it's just my pc though) but its interesting to see how much the shape has changed, i'm not quite sure what i think, i like the picture in the 40's, and not sure about the look now...just wanted some thoughts

Notice the Am dogs weak rear ends, they stand on most of their back legs, long stiff necks stuck up high, just hidious looking and very weak coups drop off like a cliff. It is no wonder they cannot do much work.
Look how the German Breds I feel improved, u have to get used to seeing the backs for they must jump a six foot wall with a 5 lb dummy in their mouths, go over the bridge same height, and return. They do alot of hard work to obtain titles in Germany, Spain, Netherlands, Italy, etc. They stand of their toes mostly in read, up front they drop right under the shoulder, some others place the front feet too far out. Went over it quickly however, but I see improvement, and Am lines worsen.

Max von Stepanitz is rolling over in his grave. What has become of the noble GSD in the past 60 years is shameful..

When I saw my first GSD I thought that it had hip or rear leg trouble because the back end was so sloped.
Why is a sloped hind end desirable in the GSD?

The only bad slope or dropped croup is in American Shepherds for showing to get back feet way under on trotting in the show ring. U do not see a German Shepherd from european countries with dropped croups, they could never jump a six foot wall with a 5lb dummy in their mouths. They are bred for rear strength to work, jump and show. Am. lines only show, few work. They nearly stand on their entire back legs. Take a look at the big difference. European lines stand mostly stacked right on toes mostly. Croups do not drop they slant. Big difference in them. This is why some Breeders are just ruining the breed frounded in Germany.

Thanks sheplovr, that clears it up a bit. I can see a difference between European lines and American lines. My point of reference comes from horses, where a strong, square rump is desirable for rear strength. I never realized that dogs get more strength from a slanted back end.

I don't like seeing todays dogs which always have such a slope. They look so much healthier. I'd much rather have one from the 1940's that one from today.

I can't stand the severely sloped backs of the American GSD's, nor can I stand the severely roached backs of the German lines. I think there's good and bad breeding in both lines.
