I bought a ruby cavalier about a year ago and I am just in love with him. They have such great dispositions and are fun to be around. Was wondering if there were any other cavalier owners or breeders out there... and if you love your cavalier as much as I love mine.http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h119/bsktbllcrzy9/williepics002.jpg

What a sweet puppy! I love Cavaliers. How was the house-breaking? Are they difficult like I've heard?

It took us a couple weeks to get him house broken. Like most toy breeds it was a little more difficult than a larger breed, But with constant reminders they learn fairly quickly.
Yes, I love my cav soooooooooooo much. to the point that my hubby hates it !! oh well..... He must get over it.. I have a black and tan girl called maisy, who is 16 months.. She is a breath of fresh air !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have 3 cavaliers. Two tri-colors and one blenhiem. I just absolutley love and adore my dogs. In my eyes they're perfect. Although i've never met a Cavalier i didn't like. and i've met alot.
I noticed that you live in Minnesota. What is the name of the breeder you got your Ruby Cavalier from? One of my Cavaliers came from a breeder in Minnesota.

I had a tri colour cavalier for 11 years until he died in december but they are fantastic dogs!
I now have a baby toy poodle and i'm trying to get my husband to buy me another cavalier but he's resisting at the moment!

This is my Cav Billie, we got him in last month. Still isn't house trained yet though, but that isn't his fault, we live in an appartment that just has a terrace so no grass which is what is was used to.

I have a black and tan CKCS. He is 2 and a half now n I couldnt be without him. He has been there for me through some pretty bad times n always there to give me a hug when I need it. Nothing is better than cuddling up with my boy. I have a 16 month old daughter and he is soooooo great with her. Always has been from the moment she came home from the hospital. She is a little pest and often pulls his ears - I am very protective over him and would say that I love them both equally. People say 'its only a dog' but he is MY dog n I love him to bits :)

I have never had a broblem with my cav. He is and always has been the most sweetest and thoughtful dog I have ever come across. He is so kind to my little daughter and MY best friend. I love him dearly. I want another one but am unsure as to what age and sex to go for. What will be the best match for him?? He is nearly 2 and a half years old. ANY ADVICE?? thanks all xxxx

Such cute little dogs!
My question to the Cav owners;
What are Cav's temperments like? Are they fiesty/outgoing or are they shy/laid back? I've never met one in person, that's why I ask. They are an adorable breed though.

i adore cavaliers and have owned 2 now. but devastingly i lost them both.
my first one was a tri coulored cav named lola we got her as a pupy and she died a puppy :( only 5 and half months old. she died from a heart defeact. she was a lovley girl that shud of had many years in her.
after we owned a king charles i new i couldnt live without one so i got another 4 months later a blenhiem cav named holly we alos got her as a puppy and she died a month before her first birthday. (one week ago) :(
she had been ill for few weekswe noticed weight loss first had her at vets numerous times over it till eventully got to bottom of it after they did a scan and it was her kidneys they had not developed properly. we are very sad and miss her loads.
now its only been a week and my house is not same we wil be gettin a another dog no doubt but my partner is sayin no to another cav i did agree but i love the breed dearly and they have given me so much love as short as it was. i just couldnt belive our bad luck twice over. i miss holly so much and really need a furry freind right now for a cuddle. what wud u guys do in my situation? honest answers please.
were did u all get your cavs from?? and they are all gorgeous btw.

They are beautiful little dogs! Trayc - personally, I would go for another dog. I am one of those people who has always gotten another dog pretty much immediately after the previous one dying. It might sound like I don't miss the other dog, of course I do, but my life just felt empty. When Wispa died, we rescued another dog 9 days later.
It's different for everyone, if you feel ready, go for it. You won't be relacing Holly, just finding another friend. Hopefully you will get a healthy pup this time around if you do go for a dog, I know you must be heartbroken with losing both of your dogs so young.

Trayc the time between when my dog Tizzy died and we got Molly from the shelter was one of the worst of my life. My whole routine had been set around looking after Tizzy, and when he died it left a huge hole in my life, and that of my family.
We didn't go out looking for a replacement, my dad and I drove past the local shelter and just decided to pop in and have a look. We didn't find anything suitable, but had a chat with the staff who mentioned a cocker spaniel puppy in a foster home that was still available. We went to look at her and it was love at first sight.
The day she came home was so lovely, the house felt like a home again. It didn't stop me missing Tizzy any less, but Molly just gave us back the missing link.
It is my belief that the right dog comes to you, my last few dogs have all been by chance.
If I was you, I'd just visit a few shelters and see what's there. I do happen to know of a shelter in wales that takes in a lot of CKCs from puppy farms, they need a loving understanding home but you might be just the person to help one become a happy pet.
http://www.freewebs.com/manytearsrescue/dogslookingforhomes.htm
If you scroll through the dogs there's quite a few cavs and also cockers on there, they have some really wonderful dogs on there and quite often have puppies. They have dogs in foster all over the UK, so you might see some in your area.

thanks happysaz..i agree house is so empty right now. i miss her more n more evry day. and keep getti lil reminders. this morning i put my jacket on and in my pocket was a treat and that was it then i burst in to tears. her ashes came back other day in a lovely casket. we held a lil cermny for her witha poem i had wrote about her.
i have been lookin in to adoption so will c watch this space.
melamphine that so sweet thanks i do belive thats true what u say.and im so glad u found and rescued molly.
and thanks for the link i have visted this site and read about lil norris story have u seen that? god bless him wat a lil fighter and such a cute dog. looked at the king charles there is quite a few but it says they need be homed with other animals but i dont have any other animals i couldnt take 2 dogs in i dont think. i dont feel like im ready for another dog but maybe its what i need i just miss her lots. as i said to happysaz i do think we will be adoping what better way to help a dog than to give the one without one a lovin home they deserve. i saw winnie the french bulldog she sounds so much like what holly was like and tho what an adorabe dog and i was realy drawn to her but looks like she has a home now. which is great tho.
will have a word with my dp and maybe go look at a few shelters this weekend.

Well good luck Trayc, I'm sure that the right dog will come to you when the time is right.
They do have some lovely dogs on that website, I have seen little Norris, he's such a dear little chap.
I was thinking about your situation and I have to say that I think a cocker spaniel might be a good option for you to consider as you love spaniels so much. My cocker is such a great little dog, and they suffer from less health problems than the CKCs, especially if you get a parti-colour (the goldens can have more issues).

Trayc a well chosen cocker spaniel is just as good with children as a CKC! I believe that all spaniel breeds are good family dogs, our springer we had before was also wonderful with kids, completely without fault temperament wise. I've got just Molly now, but my dad grew up with cockers and springers, as did my gran and they adore them.
Molly has been raised with us, my brother was 10 when we got her so she wasn't particularly used to small kids, but my young cousin (who is 6 now) harasses Molly a lot and Molly takes it extremely well. She is so gentle and patient with her, even though my cousin likes to constantly pester her.
You need to be careful that you choose a good one, some cockers have been badly bred and can be grumpy. However, I think this is often a combination of poor socialisation and training too. There is an issue called Cocker Rage Syndrome that occurs occasionally, and is much more common in the golden and solid colours due to excessive inbreeding in them. The parti-colours and the blue roan (which I have) are often more predictable in temperament.
What I would say about cockers is that they are quite strong in personality and can be a bit bossy, they certainly like to tell you their thoughts (Molly never shuts up). They're brave beyond their size, Molly is an excellent watch dog, she'll bark like mad at someone at the door but as soon as the door opens she's all over them with kisses. They need direction and stimulation as they are a working breed, more than the CKC, but this means they're a lot more playful and energetic so if you've got kids that will throw a ball you're set!

Oh yes, do look into rescue, you will not regret it! All mine have been rescues, and they always will be in the future too. Of course I don't have spaniels, but I do love them, every one :)

[quote=trayc;241920] Trayc don't give up on cavaliers. I am sorry you have been unlucky with your last two. My own cavalier has several problems but by trial and some error he remains healthy as it's possible for him to be. He has a heart murmour which is checked regularly and didn't stop him walking for 8 miles the other week and was fresh as a daisy at the end of it! They are one of the nicest breeds and I know I'm biased when I say that but it's not their fault some unscrupolous breeders have cashed in on their popularity.
My advice is to ask around maybe check with the Cavalier King Charles spaniel club for reputable breeders and ask lots of questions. There has to be someone out there breeding healthy dogs!:)

id like to think that aswell sue. why do they have to messaround with the breed so much as its not makin them better its makin it worse:(.
how old is your cav ?sounds like he a proper fighter lil fellow bless him. glad its not affected him that much.
i would love to own another cavalier i think they are fantastic dogs. bet there will be none in a rescue centre tho. i am goin to a rescue a dog and hopefully find a freind for life. my partner not got heart to go looking at dogs yet so im still lonely and pining for a furry freind.

Trayc my CKC spaniel is six years old and was 18 months old when I got him. He was on the thin side and his previous owners didn't mention any health problems when they took my money! A health check at my vet's revealed fleas and an ear infection. All sorted out quickly however. His ongoing problems are managed but can't be cured. I wouldn't part with him for anything. Please see my gallery for photos of Duke. I hope you find another furry friend Cavalier or otherwise. I would love another cavvy but Duke doesn't care for the company of other dogs!

His heart problem was only diagnosed last year and up to present doesn't cause him any trouble and he's not on medication yet. He has a form of irritable bowel disease and it appears that was why he weighed only 7 kgs when I got him. He's on a special dog food which is allergen free and only has the odd day when he isn't well and as you saw from his pictures he's a lot heavier now! :)

Such cute little dogs!
My question to the Cav owners;
What are Cav's temperments like? Are they fiesty/outgoing or are they shy/laid back? I've never met one in person, that's why I ask. They are an adorable breed though.
If you get a Cavvy you will be hooked for life. They are brilliant dogs. I've met some who are a bit timid, however mine (Duke) isn't. When he is out he's a very confident little dog. When he's at home he's the most affectionate and loving dog I've ever had. Loves to spend hours on my knee if I let him and gives me a hug every morning. Not something I've taught him to do! My advice is to do your homework and find a reputable breeder as Cavaliers are prone to many genetic problems i.e digestive and heart problems. Don't be put off though you will be rewarded many times over. Good Luck
