Hi guys, wondering if you could shed some light on whether an Aslation is the same as a GSD. I;ve had a look at some websites, but they don't seem to be too clear, some say Alsations are a dying breed, others say Alsation is another name for a GSD, or that out of Germany they are called Alsations.......confused!

I believe that the term "Alsatian" is the same as a GSD, however it used outside of Germany.

The name started during World War I owing to hositlites towards Germany.
For whatever it is worth something similar happened to the German Spitz, in the US this breed is called the "American Eskimo Dog."

Yeah, Skunkstripe is correct. The name German Shepherd was changed to Alsatian during the World Wars as anything associated with the Germans was considered negative. It is basically 2 names for the same breed.

Alsation
1936
The Alsatian was originally known in England as the German Shepherd Dog. It is related to the wolf and there has been much unjust criticism of its supposed treachery and ferocity. It is in fact a first-rate watch-dog and guard is very intelligent, is easily trained and can track as efficiently as a Bloodhound. H. M. King Edward VIII, when Prince of Wales, owned an Alsatian called "Claus of Seale" which gained awards both in the Show ring and in intelligence tests

This might explain a difference of Alsation West German Dogs as well, but was sent to England. A real interesting read on them today although this shepherd looks American in stack?http://www.dogforum.org/newthread.php?do=newthread&f=37
The Alsatian Dog

The character of the Alsatian Dog is second to none. Their stout courage, strong heart, and keen senses, have made them a world wide favorite. The Alsatian is an active but dignified dog, that gets along fine with children and other animals as long as they have been properly socialized when young.
Alsation dogs are easily trained, and are bred primarily for guard duties. They make excellent watchdogs, are extremely loyal, have a placid temperament, and they make ideal family pets.
The Alsatian Dog is known throughout the world for his intelligence and faithfulness. He has earned the reputation as a good family companion, guide dog, police dog and herding dog, of course.
Alsatian Dog History
The Alsatian dog is the result of a concerted effort to breed the ideal shepherd dog, one capable of herding and guarding sheep flocks. 1899 saw the formation of an organization devoted to overseeing the breeding of the German Shepherd, the Verein fur Deutsche Scharferhunde SV. German breeders were seeking to develop not only a herding dog, but also one that could excel at jobs requiring courage, athleticism and intelligence.
Their success was evidenced by the fact that the Alsatian had proven itself a more than capable police dog, and subsequent careful breeding perfected its abilities as an intelligent and fearless companion and guardian dog.

They are recognized by our AKC also. Difference is a straighter back, stronger back, no dropped croup like Am lines, so this is good. They come in black and blk/tan. Not real red pigment. Nice dogs somewhat heavier boned in some. Do not have any idea of price or where to buy one or pricing of. :)
