I have a recipe for chicken liver pate. Basically you take chicken livers and puree them, mix in some heavy cream and bake it at low heat for an hour. If I can find the recipe I'll post it, although for dogs I would take out the heavy cream. It ends up looking like mocha frosting.

This is one I was given a while back...unfortunately I've never gotten around to trying it, so I can't say anything about it....I don't know, I'd probably only do 4oz of the cream cheese, a whole block seems to be a lot.
Frosting:
8 oz Neufchatel Cheese (lowfat cream cheese)
2 tablespoons plain yogurt
2 tablespoons honey
2-3 tablespoons flour

hmm, when I was baking treats I did the frosting Christine mentioned. And I put some red food coloring :)
Good luck!

This is going to be an unpopular post no doubt, but DOGS DON'T NEED FROSTING! Why do we insist on trying to find ways to feed dogs human style food. In my opinion there are so many better ways to enrich your dogs life than by baking this type of treat for them. Instead spend the extra half an hour playing an active or mentally challenging game with your dog, or use their regular food to stuff and freeze a kong to keep them busy, go for an extra walk or perhaps drive a bit further to have them check out a new walking venue.

geez kaos, are you having a bad day? or feel like food bashing this morning?
I want frosting...so what.

I don't know, I am in a baking mood, I am gonna put frosting.
Kaos, some people like to bake.. of course I highly doubt that coco-bean will be putting frosting all the time.. but for some special treats:)
Hmm, you would think those that opt to feed raw in an attempt to provide a healthy and natural diet for their dogs might just find the baking and frosting of treats just a tad contradictory????

nope, because im against WHEAT products and anything with corn and gluten...not against baking!
it's all depending on the reasons why someone switched to raw in the first place.
I had health reasons to consider, many dont and do it because they just want a healthier diet for their pup.
baking doesnt majically ADD corn or gluten, it simply takes out a portion of the nutritional value, but it's a treat so if your dog is only given this treat once a day or once a week, they arent loosing anything but are gaining only little of what they would without it baked...
it's kinda a loose-.25% win ;) instead of a loose loose situation.
BUT then again i dont bake with gluten filled flour ;)

Ehh...dogs are supposed to be fun and if they are having fun baking tasty treats for their dogs then there's no problem. Yeah sure the dog doesn't appreciate all the fancy stuff but they do appreciate the taste.:D
Sadly very few of these receipes would constitute a healthy addition to a dogs diet. Having an obese dog or one with bad tooth decay is not fun either.

09-06-2007, 07:44 PM
no not an addition...just a little something extra...you know, those things they call "treats" not...a "meal" ;)
Like it or not, treats and anything else you choose to feed your dog are an addition to your dogs diet.
I am not aiming these comments at you personally Coco, just the general trend towards feeding dogs versions of unhealthy human foods such as 'cookies' 'cakes' and 'frosting' I find unnecessary and not in the dogs best interest. I know you are very careful with your dogs diets on the whole Coco, but you would not believe how many obese puppies I see in my classes and how many very young dogs have horrible looking teeth.

Seriously Kaos.
WE are not going to be pouring sugar in it, we are not going to put 5 sticks of butter.
I'll say it again (and it's only my view) but they just don't need it and are better off without it. Sadly our dogs are starting to mimic our own obesity and health issues and this is a slippery slope.
hmm, when I was baking treats I did the frosting Christine mentioned. And I put some red food coloring :)

Honey is sugar, and most of us take trouble to shop carefully and buy quality dog food WITHOUT artificial colouring.

Ok so, what are you saying? My dog is going to grow up to be obese? She didn't eat the treats and if she did I WOULD NOT GIVE HER THAT AS A MEAL!And not a lot.
Nope, simply that your dog would be better off without your frosting.

Without my frosting?
It's intended for dogs, but I would certainly try it out.

alright you two fysty folks...
yes i care about my dogs diet other wise i wouldnt be asking questions all the time about meats, supplements etc etc.
BUT my dogs are not robots they dont get training pounded into their heads, they dont get EXACTLY what they need in their diet everyday...
(i know we are not dogs, but still) i dont eat everything i should...and sometimes i forget to brush my teeth.
live a little, im going to give my pup a little extra, the frosting is not going to kill them, just dont put extra in it...use exactly whats needed-no more!
I already think my 3 are WAY better off with the diet they are on now, but im not going to stop giving them goodies every once in a while because it's not supposed to be in their diet.
i just dont think it's a big deal.
I still give my dog treats from wal-mart...or cheapo ones from petco or petsmart...(im sure some of you do too) so im pretty sure whatever i give them that isnt manufactored and prepackaged, their better off with anyways!
the frosting is not going to kill them, just dont put extra in it...use exactly whats needed-no more!
Nope, not going to kill them, but this type of treat with sugar in is going to create a need to start brushing your dogs teeth which would otherwise have been unnecessary for most dogs.
Most dogs would be just as delighted with a far healthier training treat such as small pieces of liver / chicken or whatever.
So why would you bother wasting your time creating frosting? Each to their own, I will agree to differ with you.

why would their be sugar in my frosting? im on an all-natural health kick here...no need for adding preservatives
I was talking about the recipe iwantmypup referred to as the one she used, to which she also added artificial colour.

oh sorry, forgot.
well i dont add stuff like that, nor do i put preservatives in them...im alll natttuuurrreeeelllll!! ;)

I'll be the first to admit that I give Ozzy treats of things that aren't the best for him at times; however, I try to keep those treats to a bare minimum & am VERY aware of how much of that sort of thing he gets. It's not much.
Kaos is 100% right though, the dogs are much better off without these things. I try to feed as many healthy treats as possible instead but do cheat on the occasional basis.
When Ozzy was right under 1 year of age, he weighed 2 pounds more than I thought he should so I trimmed him down. I'm absolutely militant about proper condition in my animals.
It is a fact that dogs who are fed sugar on a regular basis often develop diabetes & other serious health problems that go with it.
I personally wouldn't make a recipe that contained honey or artificial coloring & rarely would I use a product that contains flour. That doesn't mean that Ozzy doesn't get the odd taste of ice cream or that I don't let him lick the odd ice cream bowl.
Just my :2cents: but you can decide that you'd like to feed these things to your dogs knowing that they're not a good choice but I don't see much sense in defending the position of it being a good idea. (You can pelt me with tomato if you'd like ... but that's the way I see it.)

im not defending it being a good idea, im defending the right to have fun with the fact we DO HAVE DOGS and we CAN BAKE THEM TREATS if we want! i mean, its fun, i enjoy doing things like that...even if they dont eat them...it gives me PURE enjoyment. and people who dont have dogs, im pretty sure they dont make treats for dogs...so they dont get to have that enjoyment!
it's one of the perks of owning a dog...to do fun stuff like that!

I can't argue with that as long as you do it responsibly & know the risks.

Hmm...you could make a perfectly healthy frosting for dog treats out of something very nasty that dogs love. Frosting doesn't have to be loaded with sugar it just has to look pretty. :drunken:
Here's a couple that I found.
~ Yogurt Icing ~
This icing can be colored naturally for decorating:
· For pink icing - use beet powder
· For green icing - use spinach powder
· For yellow icing - use turmeric
Directions:
3 cups yogurt chips (NOTE: These can be hard to find! The only place I've been able to find them is online, at: Barry Farm (http://www.dog-treat-recipe-exchange.com/cgi-bin/counter.pl?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.barryfarm.com%2Fnu tri_info%2Fbaking%2520supplies%2Fyogurtcoating.htm&referrer=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.dog-treat-recipe-exchange.com%2Findex.html). I'm still looking for someone who sells yogurt chips that are not made with sugar or partially hydrogenated oils.)
1 tablespoon vegetable powder for coloring (see above)
1 teaspoon vegetable oil
Melt carob chips and add vegetable oil and colorings. Dip cookies halfway in icing, or use a pastry brush to cover, and place cookies on waxed paper to dry.
The Following Icing Recipes Require Refrigeration
~ Banana Carob Frosting ~
2 cup mashed banana
1 Tbs safflower margarine
6 Tbs carob flour
2 tsp vanilla
3 tsp unbleached flour
Blend ingredients well. Frost cookies with a spatula or fill a pastry bag fitted with a fine tip and pipe onto cookies.
