Is your dog as uttelry loony as mine??



Cai is a 20 month old retriever, who is completley insane! He has failed the exam at his dog training 3 times (hes been at it since he was old enough) because he is so destracted and exited by everyone else, he doesnt listen to anyone, he does as he likes, he has no attention span, he wont work for toys, or food, ar attention, he loves to play but barks and jumps around like a loony, he launches himslef on everyone, if you make eye contact with him he thinks hes made a friend for life and will pester you to death! He jumps all over other dogs, and wont leave them alone.

We run him at least 3 times a day, and hes not alone in the house ever.

Dont get me wrong, we love him to pieces, he is a wonderfull animal, beautifull, fantastic character, and very loving, everyone who coems in contact with him falls for him too. The only thing we would change would be his obedience! We are fast running out of training methods!!!

Any goldie taming tips?? :p

Let's see....I remember someone saying once that Golden Retrievers live by the motto: "Life is a party thrown especially for me."
I happen to think that there is something to this. :D
If it is possible to tire them out I'm sure I haven't figured out how. Sophia may be a mushball as far as her personality goes, but phsyically she puts any human to shame. She can run 10 miles at 20-25 miles per hour, take a swim in icy waters, roll in the snow and be good to go all over again. So anything you can do to burn off energy will help.
As far as behavior goes, you might try the "Nothing in Life is Free" philosophy. This will help get them focused on you and realize that they better pay attention and do as you say. We had a thread not too long ago on Labbies (whoa re about as crazy as Goldens) that involved NILIF.

i think you have my dog's double. that is exactally lilly when she was that age. lilly is now and 4 and still has her many moments. most all my friends call her a "blonde" :p you are doing an awesome job with running her, having some with her at all times and taking her to dog classes. i love to hear people say that about their dogs.

i have been training lilly in 4-h obedience, agility and showmanship for 5 years now. but if you would seriously meet her, you wouldn't know :p my greatest advice to give a golden owner is, that you have to train with a sence of humor. toughness doesn't work with them, they just don't understand and want to cheer you up, lol. positive training works wonders.

sounds like you have an awesome dog and don't forget to enjoy and remember every minues of it. i also have a 6 year old lab and she is slowly slowing down in energy. i wish for anything to have those days back with her and one day i will want the same back with lilly. good luck with your dog, she sounds like a great one :)

his obeiance is spot on. He been doing it for 8 years, and gets cocky with it. Always make shore the other dogs are watching. And occationaly he so cocky he show's off.

off lead in the park, he will play with any dog.

Vixen you are totaly right.

"Intelligent Clown" sums Cai up to a tee. He acts like an idiot, as thought he doesnt have two brain cells to rub together, but then he lets his act silp and just for a few moments hes really clever!!

For example we took him to loch lomond, because he loves to swim. There was another family with 2 dogs where we were but they were so far away we didnt think hed care, so we let him off. As always, he ran straight for the water, just out of our reach. THEN, just far enough away that we couldnt catch him, he bolted off to play with the other families dogs!!! It was as though he had planned the whole thing, as mad as that sounds!

We do agility with cai but we have to run him on the lead, which is tricky going through tunnels, it takes a team! If hes off the lead he clears the first jump and then runs to the nearest dog and jumps on it! There is another goldie in the class who is older, and I think hes an assistance dog because his owner is deaf, so he is Impeccably trained, and does everyhting before hes asked! Puts our boy to shame!!!

People with dogs in the village have started to avoid us in becuase hes so desparate to play he ends up on his back legs, whereby hes about 5 foot tall, straining to get to them. I think they worry he will squish thier wee yorkies and westies!! :p
