pretty dogs u have there. I imagine some more will pop up. Long ago I had a black Cocker named Puddles, wonder why?

No, the time I had him Jackie Kennedy had one and I named it after her cocker. It got kinda mean however. Best of luck with your dogs they are very nice...:)

I have a blue roan English Cocker and a collie, but before them I had a liver/white English Springer who was an amazing dog. I have a pic of my current cocker - it's not the best one though! http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg86/melamaphine/s61306707_34004979_8510.jpg

Hi there brand new to this site and thought I would 'try' and pop up a picture of Japser. He is 16 months old now and is great. The only problem is he has been such a good addition to our house, that my wife is trying to persuade me to get another pup!!!!

Cheers for now

James

Cool I have added him onto my avatar.

Hi I'm new here too.
I have 2 cockers..jake who is a laid back 5 year old blue roan, and Izzie who is 7 months old on her K.C. papers she is a blue roan cocker spaniel but my vet said she is a black & white, I was wondering if anyone can help, as I am now thinking if she is even is a cocker she's a lot more muscular than jake and thicker around the hips, and almost as big, I personally think she may be a springer or sprocker or feild cocker..I dont know, :confused:I'm confused, at the end of the day it makes no real difference to us, we love her to bits, her bouncy feistiness and enthusiasm bring us great pleasure:)
I'll add a pic (sorry the quality is not great)...let me know what you think:typer:

hi...im not an expert on spaniels but i think izzie looks as if she may have some springer in her...so maybe she is a sprocker??? she is a cutie though! maybe you could gogle some breeders and email them a photo of izzie and ask their opinion? i did this with ruby, she was sold to me as a blue roan and then after a few weeks we notices some light brown markings on her. i am now informed that she is blur roan and tan, some times known as a tri or parti...but im not bothered...ruby is just ruby!!!:)

We havent got a dog at the moment but am trying to convince hubby to get another one, we look after a springer occasionally and fell in love, lively (even though shes 12 years old now) full of fun, affectionate, and her tail never stops wagging. Would love to get a springer but have been told they are hard to train, any advice welcome from you experienced owners:)

Lynnie,

We have never had a problem training Jasper. I have found that Springers generally love food and that makes it very easy to train them. When we got Jasper we immediately signed him up to local puppy classes. It was the best thing we could ever have done and would recommend it to anyone with a new pup. The pups get to meet other puppies and so they learn about interraction with other dogs and we got great tips on teaching the pups basic commands. We used the clicker method and I was a bit sceptical at first but it works really well. Using small treats such as 'coachies' or small bits of hot dogs he quickly learnt the sit, down, stand, bow and 'almost' a roll over!!! He can wait for food until we say so even if it is on the floor and we can get him to wait while we walk away then recall in the house fine, even if you walk out of his vision briefly.

The only thing with Springers is that outside they are very easily distracted and tend to walk with their nose in the ground smelling everything, which makes it a bit difficult to do any training outside. Jasper is 16 months and I still haven't let him off the lead yet but we are working on his recall in our back garden and with an extending lead.

Springers and Spaniels in general have the tag of being 'daft' but I find they are far from it and are a joy to train if you put a bit of effort in when they are very young.

Hope this helps you a bit.:)

i think that it is a popular misconception about springers being hard to train...yes they like to be busy and do take a lot of hard work but a naughty or untraind cocker is usually the result of lazy owners!!! if you really want a spaniel but dont have the time for a springer, then maybe consider a cocker (i am not biased...honest!):)

All the dogs are real beautys. :D i found with my sprocker he was so easy to train and has been said b4 he would do anything for food. But with Jess its a battle of wills she nos the commands but will sit there to c who will give in first. with recall for both the dogs was started on day one with letting them into the drive and calling them back, so when they were allowed down the park for the first time they were let straight of the lead. I've been very lucky as i've never had a prob with there recall. Keep all the pics coming as i luv doggie photies:D

Hi, I have been having problems with Tess' recall lately. She gives me a "ya whatever" look and keeps doing what she is doing. The dog trainer says that it is because she is in her teenage phase and that I should keep her on a leash until she listens. WHat are your recommendations?

By the way, I love your quote about dogs being like shadows. :)

i've always called my dogs back with a funny high piched voice never as if im cross or series. Then when they come back make a big over the top amount of praise. I had a very few times when Frec didn't come back first time. I would then put him on the lead and walk him on the park where he had been playing with his friends off lead. He would be on the lead 5/10 mins then let him off again, let him play for a little while then recall he would come back straight away. funny voice and big amounts off praise. I got some very strange looks but my dog came back. Hope it helps:D

its nice to know you all seem to think springers arnt that hard to train, we thought of getting one about a year old if we can, i help take the puppy class at our local dog club so couldnt train my own puppy at the same time and that would mean hubby do it, (dont think he would be to impressed with me telling him what to do):p Never seem to have any springers in our classes only cockers and king charles and they all do well, might have a word with the owner of the club (if i can get a word in) he's in great demand:)

Thanks mcrawley, yours look gorgeous too. As far as I am concerned there's very little to match a spaniel in the cutey stakes! I had a springer before Molly, and he was an angel too and the most loving dog I have ever known.

Spaniels, gotta love 'em!:)

Hi, Here's another spaniel - Jake. He's an Irish Water Spaniel nearly 3. He spends his time swimming in the river spey or on the moray beaches and trecking in the scottish forests.

Thanks for the compliment. You won't see many as they are an endangered breed. Its such a shame. They were bred in Ireland as gun dogs but seem to have become less popular. In addition there are some known genetic problems and the dogs are dying young - Jake's father died at age 6 - they should live until 14/16 but it is very rare nowadays. This is what Jake should look like when he's not wet! Which is almost always!

They are all fantastic. oh no endangered thats so not good:(. Is there any thing being done for the genetic thing, it would be so wrong to lose such a stunning breed. well done for doing your bit to help this breed.;)

Hi there Jake2006, Jake is absolutely gorgeous! I love spaniels and I've always wondered what the Irish Water Spaniel is actually like, as you don't see them very often.

Are they similar to the other spaniel breeds in temperament? ie Greedy, nutty and sometimes downright infuriating! (but very loveable at the same time). Also, do you know much of their history? I've always wanted to know if they are part poodle way back in the breed, to get the beautiful curly coat.

Sorry about all the questions, I love spaniels and I like to know all there is about them!

What a lovely pic of Molly - she looks like a really happy girl.

You asked about the history of Irish Water Spaniels (IWS) - I think the best thing is for me to put the link and if you browse that website you'll see some really lovely pictures of IWS and learn about their history and, sadly their medical problems.

http://www.siwsc.co.uk/

Some interesting facts - IWS are also known as 'bog dog' (in Ireland) and boy does Jake love to run around the muddiest bogs, streams and ponds he can find.

They are also known as 'whiptail' which is true as their tail (which isn't clipped) really does look like a whip - and boy do you need to get out of the way when an IWS is wagging his tail near to you. As Jake is a happy dog he wags his tail ALL THE TIME!

They have webbed feet - but then most spaniels do I believe.

They are lovely dogs but do need a lot of exercise. The irish water spaniel breeders can be a bit 'precious' and want to vet potential owners as if they were joining the Government. I think the only caution I would offer to a potential owner is that they need a lot of exercise and can become bored if they are not stimulated. But again, I think that is usual for spaniels in general.

Jake's 'best friend' is a young springer spaniel bitch.

Hope you enjoy the website.

Thanks Jake2006, that website is really interesting. The IWS is a beautiful dog, I think I have only ever seen one before and I've always wondered whether one day they may add to my spaniel collection. What you say about spaniels is true, Molly is a smallish Cocker, but she could easily match the Springer I had before her for energy and craziness.

Molly, however, is a bit of a disgrace to the spaniel name as she cannot swim at all - she just sinks and bubbles come up. She still loves the water, so we have to be careful that she doesn't get out of her depth (which she often does). She has had to be fished out quite a few times when she misjudges water, resulting in some very cold & wet owners! She's quite a contrast to my springer who you couldn't get out of the water when he was swimming. My collie doesn't like to get her feet wet so she's no trouble, silly spaniels are the problem!

Thanks for the post. They are great dogs. My sprocker Freckel loves the water but dosn't like getting out of his depth. When the weather gets hot he finds the muddist puddle he can and rolls in it. He is white with brown flecks but when he comes back from the park he is ushley mud colured.lol:lachen:My puppy Jess luvs the water also but i'm glad to say she can swim. I luv my spanials and glad i picked them. Yes they do need alot of exercise but that is a small price to pay for all the love and affection they give you in return.;)

Hi Doodledame - no Jake isn't a poodle (although he can make his 32Kg very light and curl up really small on my lap). He's an Irish Water Spaniel.

I must admit a lot of people ask me if he is a labradoodle but his build is different if you saw him next to a doodle. His chest is very deep like a greyhound. His feet are webbed and the fur on his tail is very short so that he looks like he's got a whip for a tail. Its sometimes dangerous to transport IWS in crates as they are notorious for getting their tail stuck inbetween the bars!

He doesn't shed but if he is really stressed he can blow his coat - which has only happened with us once post-rescue.

I do like the breed and wouldn't hesitate in getting another.
