I have admired the Borzoi for almost a year but never really pursued owning one because I lived in a small 2 bedrrom apt with my mom and me, with no yard. And a borzoi is a large dog.
Well recently me and my mom moved to a nice house with a large yard and ample running space for a large dogs' needs, and I was researching dog breeds and came across Afghan Hounds. I'm very interested in these two breeds and was wondering if anyone on here has owned one before? How there temperment is? They seem to be quite rare in my area so I've never actully meet a Borzoi nor Afghan, but my friend has a rescued greyhound and I just love her. I know all three breeds are sighthounds so I was thinking their temperments would be at least kinda the same. Another concern was those breeds around cats. I've heard they can't be trusted at all with small animals and other websites say if they are raised with the cat they won't bother it.:o
I was hoping to get a puppy from a breeder so it would be raised with my kitty.
So if anyone has any good advice or knows a breeder within the Ohio area, it would be greatly appreciated:)

Hi First of all both the Borzoi and the Afghan are sight hounds .

I have had Borzois for over 20 years and they have all lived with and been fine with my cats, indoors, but I would not trust them outdoor with my cat and especially with strange cats,

They both need a lot of grooming especially the Afghan. Apart from that Idon't know a great deal about the Afghan and will leave the info on that from someone who owns or has owned one.

Borzois are great to live with and are a bit like the greyhound in that though they need regular walking, they can be real couch potatoes at times. You need a yard with at least a 7foot high fence as they can jump really high.

In my opinion They should not be allowed off lead if you are within a two mile radius of busy roads as they are so fast in fact the word borzoi in Russian means switft, and it only takes a small furry or even a poly bag blowing in the wind for them to go into chase mode, and when this happens they are oblivious to everything even the most well trained one. I don't mean that you can never let them off lead, but I would just be careful of the circumstances.

My old Borzoi who went tot he bridge in March last year was best friends with my birman cat and the two of them shared the bed so it is possible to have borzois and cats together. I would of course advise slow introductions of both and don't leave the dog and the cat alone until you are sure the dog can be trusted.

I am in the UK so can't help with a breeder in your area, sorry.

As said by Borzoi Mad how much care they require, she shows her and they have a longer wavy type of coat that must be brushed and groomed.

The greyhounds do not, they have a real short sleek coat, very many need rescued, so that is the way I would go. One of our Mods, Vagrey, adopts them, they are lovely dogs with little care. Also, the Italian greyhound is a tad bit smaller might be considered also. Stunning dogs to give homes to.:)

Greyhounds do make excellent pets, and despite what a lot of people say they CAN be trained as adults to live with cats. We got one of ours age 3 from a rescue, and the other aged 5, and both of them have been trained to live with our two cats, and they're fine with them. If anything, the cats are the boss.
I've never met a borzoi, so can't comment, but we nearly ended up being Afghan people instead of greyhound people years ago. But my parent's couldn't handle the grooming involved and in the end, we gave him up to a better home who knew what they were doing.

Greyhounds are wonderfull dogs. I came very close to adopting one at one point, he was a gorgeous dog, hed been in kennels most of his life but he was still calm, friendly and great with other dogs, he did however love to run! In the end (the day before he was due to come home) I agreed to let him go to a different owner as she had more space for him and another greyhound to keep him company, but honestly in my experience they are just fantastic :)
