Someone found a mission for these dogs, and now they are doing a world of good at airports. I used to be involved with aircraft years ago and it is surprising how much damage birds who hang out at airports can do to the engines. Border Collies are now being used to keep birds away from planes in Florida. Sounds like the dogs have a good time too. :)
On a recent brisk morning, Radar intently awaits her handler's command as the two make their rounds over the airport's roughly 930-acre runway and airfield.
Finally, Rebecca Stansifer lets the eager dog work.
''Shh, shh,'' Stansifer calls, and Radar takes off in the direction of a large great blue heron.
Within seconds she's at a full sprint nearing 30 mph. Before she can get within 20 yards of the bird, it retreats.
It likely won't return.

What is even better is that Border Collie rescue is involved in rescuing and training these dogs for this special mission. A win-win situation for eneryone!
