Hi
David and Jennifer with two eighteen month border terrier bitches.
They sleep in kitchen at night in thier baskets and have free access to walled garden via a flap in back door.
For the last few months they have started to mess in the kitchen when the weather is bad.
They have in the past been very good and have used the flap since been very young with the aid of a step and ramp I made for them that they no longer need
Does anyone have any suggestions as to why they should do this now after they have been so good and and any solutions to the problem

I'll venture a guess as to why your Terriers have started to mess in the kitchen. It sounds as though they are left to their own devices (go out if they want through the flap) and may not be getting the reinforcement they need to know that outside is the only acceptable place to be going. So when the weather is bad, they take the easy path and mess indoors. What can help is to go with them in the daytime and praise them lavishly when they pee or poo outdoors. The key is to make sure they understand that outdoors is the only acceptable place to go as far as you are concerned. They may be sort of housetrained but are beginning to forget. What can help even more is to go out with them at night (annoying I know, but it can help you get them back n track).

Welcome- you may need to take a few steps back and start rewarding for good behavior again...sometimes dogs can revert, it just takes a bit of work to get them back on track. :)
