This is so sad. After "Romeo" refused to leave the side of his doggy "girlfriend" who had been struck by a car last fall (story here (http://www.rockymountainnews.com/drmn/local/article/0,1299,DRMN_15_5695269,00.html)) he was finally picked up and cared for at a Denver no-kill shelter. But after he was adopted out, he had to be returned because he didn't get along with his new owner's cats.
Romeo came to the shelter last September in a shattered state after losing his Juliet on Sept. 11.

On that fateful day, Romeo was found keeping vigil over his companion, a German shepherd mix, after she was hit and killed by a car on Chambers Road.

The two dogs had been playing together in northeast Denver for at least two days before their tragic separation. The sad tale of love found and then lost captured the hearts of animal lovers.

What I find amazing is how protective he was of his companion at the scene of the accident. :(

Dogs can be so loyal, both to other dogs and to humans.

Perhaps one of the most famous stories of a dog's loyalty was that of Greyfriars Bobby.

Greyfriars Bobby was a Skye Terrier who lived in Edinburgh, Scotland in the 1800s. His elderly owner died and for the rest of his life, Bobby faithfully slept each night on his master's grave. Greyfriars Bobby was given the Freedom of the City - meaning he could go anywhere he pleased.

There is a memorial in Edinburgh dedicated to this loyal little dog.
