Hi everybody,

Stumbled upon this forum so thought I would join!!! My wife and I have a 16 month old Springer Spaniel called Jasper. He is such a character and quite big for a springer. I really miss him when I am away at work (I work abroad for 4 weeks at a time), not as much as my wife though;)

A quick question for anybody that reads this as I would like to gauge opinions. My wife is currently trying to convince me that we should get another springer. I am about 50% convinced but am a bit worried about how Jasper will take to having another dog in the house taking some of his attention away. The reason my wife gives for getting another is that it would be good company for Jasper as we don't know many people with dogs. He doesn't get much interaction with other dogs now since we stopped going to training classes.

Any thoughts or advice?

Welcome! My advice is to not get a dog for the other dog. They don't need another dog around, and many prefer to be alone with their people. If you want another dog because YOU'D enjoy another dog, go for it. :)

Hi and Welcome to the Dog Forum.

I think if it nice for dogs to have company, I always have at least two Shepherds of six I own inside with me always, and times I have 3.!!

I see nothing wrong with having two dogs, long as u give equal attention so Jasper does not feel jealous, give hugs to both, feed together, walk together and play together, no reason for a problem.

I am an elderly lady and manage six West German Shepherds as I will NOT tolerate bickering or a fight to incure. I give lots of hugs, playing together and all get along fine. In fact, I am going to get a few more.

Have fun and hope I have given good advice for you as it is my personal opinion and experience of having a ton of dogs to love daily. Enjoy the forum and hope to see ya chat more, love your av, must be Jasper? Cutie...:)

Hi and welcome to the forum from me ( a fellow Scot) and my gang.

I think another one would becompany for your boy, provided your wife feels she would manage to cope with another boisterous springer, when she is on her own.

I know people with springers so I do know they cn be a lot of work but they also bring a lot of joy and I am sure your present dog would be delighted to have a playmate.

Hi JamesG and http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q108/2dogmom_album/crittergraphics/welcomepawprints.gif

Sounds to me like your wife is doing to you what I did to my husband. :D I wanted another dog and worked on hubby for the longest time until he gave in.
It turned out that our first dog WAS indeed not thrilled about having to share attention with a second dog, but it all worked out and now they are best buddies. But it's not like they occupy each other and hubby or I have free time, more like they BOTH want to play with us. It can be a lot of fun but also a lot of work so it is a personal decision.
Good luck whatever you decide and I'd love to hear more about Jasper!

Hi again,

Just wanted to say a big thanks for all the welcomes and your opinions, they are all greatly appreciated. I go home tomorrow (Thursday), yippee, so my wife and I will be able to have a BIG talk about getting a new puppy.

Thanks again and I'll hang around this forum if that's ok:D
