Ever hear of this breed? This sighthound is supposedly an ancient breed that was nearly extinct at the beginning of the 20th century.
Representations of African Sighthound-like dogs go back to the 8th-7th millennium BC. and artifacts of Ancient Egypt show us how valuable straight eared and lop-eared smooth Sighthounds were in those days. The smooth lop-eared Sighthounds of ancient Egypt are thought to have originated from Asia (east of Egypt), but they were also part of tributes to the Pharaohs from Nubia (South of Egypt). This ancient hound resembles today's Sloughi, Saluki, Azawakh and smooth Afghan, and it is impossible without any genetic study to know whether it was a breed of its own, whether it was identical to one of these 4 breeds, or whether it was the ancestor of all lop-eared Sighthounds.

By the beginning of the 20th century, the Sloughi was almost extinct. Political upheavals had disrupted highly sophisticated breeding by leading families. A French law introduced during French occupation which prohibited hunting with Sighthounds had resulted in the shooting on sight of these dogs. Epidemic rabies had further decimated the Sloughi population. In spite of dedicated efforts which started at the end of the 1960ies in Europe, North Africa and the USA, the Sloughi is still not very common, and its breeders have an important responsibility in the conservation of this ancient breed.

They are very elegant and slender dogs-the wikipedia description says that they should not be as "brawny" as Greyhounds. :)
Its muscular system is "dry", that is, the Sloughi has flat and long muscles, which must not be as brawny as those of Greyhounds or Whippets, even when in excellent physical condition.

Hi Jean My friend Sandra who used to Breed Borzois has Sloughi's now and has bred one litter.

The are lovely dogs. She shows hers though the show numbers are still small in the UK at present and there are no Challenge Certificates up to now on offer for this elegant breed.

Here is a picture of one of hers posted with her permission.

WOW, Borzoi you have less hair on those. How elegant they look. I like them too. Your dogs are lovely but seems all these dogs are underestimated for speed, elegance and gracefulness. BEautiful animals......Love them...:)

Eunice thanks for posting that - I never expected to see such a fine example from someone's personal experience. I am amazed at those people such as your friend Sandra who work to re-establish nearly extinct breeds, it is truly a labor of love.

Is the dog's name pronounced like "slew-ee", or maybe "sluff-ee"? When I first read it I thought it sounded a little like saluki, which I know is a different dog.

Borzoi mad, your friend's dog has such a pretty coat! It looks like soft velvet. Does he like petting? I think he might be very soft to touch! How neat that she is involved in developing a breed with such a long and rich history.

Thanks,
Elyse

One of the things I love about the Greys and related breeds is how incredibly soft their coats are. Even the long-haired Galgos, like Don Miguel, in my gallery, have very soft coats.
