When pigs fly, when hell freezes over or when it snows in Phoenix are all common expressions Phoenix residents use to scoff at impossible situations!:)
Living in the desert in The Valley of the Sun where we have 360 sunny days a year and rain is an unusual event, I've been able to afford the luxury of becoming a fair weather driver.
When I left the house at 3PM it was in the low 40's which is unusual in itself. It's so rare that I haven't even owned a coat since I quit taking the dogs out for training at daylight. This was the first chance I'd had to try out the heater in my four year old car. Thank goodness it worked!
Though the wind was blowing, the distant skies were cloudy and it had rained earlier, the skies overhead were clear, I assumed the storm was over and my hunger overcame my common sense!
About a mile from home the skies opened up! In minutes I found myself committed to driving in poor visability through pounding hail on quickly flooding slippery streets. Not a good place to be for a fair weather driver in a small vehicle surrounded by seemingly monstrous SUVs!
As I pulled into the restaurant parking lot the hail stopped and I noticed white flakes landing on my windshield! It took me a moment to realize I was actually seeing real honest to goodness snow flakes in Phoenix.
For you guys that have to put up with snow off and on all winter, you're probably thinking, "what's the big deal?" The big deal is that it never snows in the middle of Phoenix!
When I walked into the restaurant all activity had stopped and everyone was standing at the windows and watching the snow fall. It didn't stick, but it was fun while it lasted and will provide many "I remember when" stories for Phoenix residents for many years to come. Sure glad I didn't miss it or I'd never have believed it!
Most likely we'll all be a little more cautious about using the phrase; "when it snows in Phoenix" too!:D
