It was 30 years ago today that the "Blizzard of 78" began.
It dropped 2-4 feet of snow inthe space of two days, had hurricane winds and tidal waves. People abandoned their cars on Rt 128. The Commonwealth of Masschusetts enacted an emergency order outlawing driving. Not that you could anway, people were cross-country skiiing up and down Mass Ave. Grocery and convenience stores had empty shelves, because the delivery trucks weren't to drive. Then they were allowed back on the road, but people couldn't get cash to buy anything because the cash delivery trucks weren't included in the exceptions.
Gradually things got back to normal, but it was a humdinger. They even printed T-shirts and since I was there the whole time, I got one and still have it!

I remember that day only too well. We had just moved into our house that August and only had one car at the time. The company I worked for let us out at noon and I went to pick up my husband and almost got stuck in the parking lot where he worked.

Thankfully we made it home without any more problems. The next morning we couldn't even see our car, just the antenna. I remember we had the rest of the week off from work. I remember it was a time we got to know our neighbors and give them a helping hand if we were walking to the market. I also remember the National Guard rescuing people from their cars along 128. Overall it was a time of people coming together. Rather than bad memories it brings back a lot of good ones ... human kindness and people extending a helping hand.

We didn't have a dog then. We got our first dog in 1981.
