I finally did it. After struggling with a Fujitsui Lifebook that I had bought on eBay (the hard drive died so I had to replace it) I finally got a nifty little laptop. I've wanted a tiny one for so long since I'm small and don't want to lug around a huge one. But the ones that I wanted all cost like $1200! Last week a guy was here calibrating some equipment and I was admiring his little laptop and he said it had cost $350. And he loved it! That's saying a lot coming from a road warrior.
It weighs less than a pound and comes pre-loaded with Linux and all kinds of open source software. You can plug a flash drive into it with any kind of Microsoft file like Word or Excel and it will open it with the Open Office software.
I always said my next upgrade from Windows 2000 Pro would be to Linux and I finally did it! With shipping it cost only $316! (OK this is the one with the 2G hard drive, which is plenty for me :D) You can hardly buy the Microsoft OS for that! And it even comes in garish Easter egg colors!
It finally came today and it worked perfectly! Only thing is I wish it had the GIMP pre-installed but what the heck, I can probably download that!

Linux always sort of imtimidated me, but I suppose in the last 8 years things have been made much more user friendly.

It is amazing. If you are used to Windows you hardly notice the difference. Except that there is no http://www.geocities.com/mymixedbreeddog/smileys/nerd/windoze.gif button on the keyboard. And for some reason it wasn't shutting down so I yanked the battery to shut it off and then re-booted. If it had been Windoze I would have gotten the "you didn't shut down properly" message but it booted up just fine.
I even tried sticking a flash drive in the USB port to see if I could read the files and it worked - no problem. They've made Linux accesible for people like me who are too lazy to go back to line commands. :D
