hello, thought I'd sign up on a forum. My mother bought a 5 week old Daschund last night and I figured I'm gonna have to do the homework on diet, training and all that fun stuff. My name is Dan and I'll get a picture of him up in a few minutes.

Hi Dan and http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q108/2dogmom_album/crittergraphics/welcomepawprints.gif

Glad you joined us!
Max is a little cutie all right. Since he is only five weeks old you may want to learn a little about vaccinations and socialization too. I'd try to help ya but tiny puppies are not my thing so hopefully you can get some good info from those who know.
Good luck!

Hi and welcome to the forum.

He is a really gorgeous little puppy but perhaps a little too young to be away from his Mother, they usually don't leave before 8 weeks. Are you in the UK or where? as countries and different vets have different ideas on puppy jabs but if in the UK fthe first one is uaull done at 8 weeks and second one at 10 weeks. If you need any help just ask and I am sure there will be someone who can help you.

Rrrrrrrr what a little cutie. He is very young to be away from mum. Don't let him socialies with any other dog until he has had his vacsinations. You r going to have so much fun with him, enjoy and if you have any questions just ask.:D

I"m from the usa, I had a feeling something was wrong. He's very small and he cries alot, but he's getting alot of attention from me and my nephew. What kind of food should he be eatting and what should he be drinking? As far as his vaccs I'm not sure

I replied on your other thread and suggested Pedigree Chum Puppy Porridge but I now see you are from the US and I don't know if that is available in the US, perhaps someone will be able to tell you and if not suggest an alternative. Also I would give a little GOATS milk(NOT Cows Milk tho' .

Together with the puppies complete or perhaps some tinned puppy food.

I can't really recommend brands as I am not familiar with the brands over there, sorry.

Hope your puppy continues to thrive, please do keep us posted.

Dan if you're not sure about vaccinations please be very careful. I don't want to scare you, but there are some nasty diseases that can kill young puppies (like parvo) and for sure that pup has not had any vaccinations since they typically don't do that until age 6-8 wks. If you can get hold of a vet and make an appt for the first series of vaccinations soon that will be a good thing you can do for your pup. Here is a little info on very young puppies

So sorry you did not have a good breeder, forgive my manners, welcome to the forum. In most states it is illegal to sale a puppy prior to 6 weeks. Five weeks is *far* too young to have been placed. Please make sure that everyone removes shoes when coming in house and place them out of reach of puppy, also hands need to be washed before playing with him.

As mentioned there are some nasty virus that your puppy is prone too, being so young and weaned to early his immune system is not up to par. So do take precautions. Ring your vet to ask about early vaccination, what you need to do and when you do bring him alert vet so that they can whisk you right into a room - the waiting room will be far to dangerous for him

As for puppy food, a very high end food soaked in goat milk should be ideal. IMHO these are some of the *worst* dog foods:

Pedigree
Ol' Roy
Any off brand
Iams
Purina/One/Plus/Chow
Eukanuba
Beneful
Science Diet
Bil-Jac
Nutro Max
Nature's Best
Nature's Recipe

To feed a puppy that young I do suggest, well I feed Raw so IMHO that's the best LOL

But for commercial I'm sure that others can tell you - since I don't use kibble I can't honestly make a recommendation.

Oh I do want to mention - Dachshunds, because of their deep chests are prone to bloat, so no corn or soy products should be in his food. Any other carb should be low on the list also (rice, rye, etc.)

Just spoke with my uncle, he says the puppy has recieved his vaccs and due for another on in March. So glad that's good to go, just worried about the food and other stuff.

Dan, a 5 week old puppy's vaccination may not be any good; vaccination schedules differ so you really do want to worry and contact your vet. There are some horrible viruses that are so painful to see in a pet; Parvo, Distemper - not pretty ways for a puppy/dog to die.

Please schedule a meeting for just your mom and the vet - so she can discuss the vaccinations the puppy is suppose to have had and what the vet recommends.

I would agree 100 per cent Dan. Please get your Mom, to schedule an appointment with the vet as soon as possible.
