Apparently the Humane society video of the abused cows at the slaughterhouse brought some huge and unexpected results!

This most likely goes on all over the country every day, but this one got caught on tape so those responsible for the inspections couldn't ignore it. Does anyone really believe the cattle will be treated better or our meat will be safer after this blows over?

Stuff like this makes me think about becoming a vegetarian. Wouldn't do much good though since many veggies have also been involved in huge recalls!

Federal officials are trying to track down the 143 million pounds of beef recalled Sunday, but they say that most of it has probably been eaten.
Keith Williams, a U.S. Department of Agriculture spokesman, said investigators have found no cases of illness related to the recalled meat.

The beef recall came after inspectors said they found "clear violations" of USDA regulations at a California slaughterhouse that has been accused of mistreating cows.

"We do not know how much of this product is out there at this time. We do not feel this product presents a health risk of any significance," said Dick Raymond, the undersecretary of agriculture for food safety. "But the product was produced in noncompliance with our regulations, so therefore we do have to take this action."

Federal officials called the recall by Westland/Hallmark Meat Packing Company the largest beef recall in U.S. history.

Raymond said cattle that had passed pre-slaughter inspections but then lost the ability to walk were slaughtered without being re-examined for chronic illness by an inspector, a practice he said violated federal regulations and had been going on for at least two years.

I guess the best thing to do is raise your own meat and grow your own veggies, thats the only way you can ever truly know whats going in your food.

This is the same video I posted a thread on as it was done with under cover cameras and men doing this. It was so cruel to treat cows yet alive and have feelings with a fork lift throwing them down hard, hosing with very strong firemen like hoses in the face and probed with electric probes for no good reason. Most were too crippled to get up so they tortured them. Most were ill and laid for the torture.

It may cut down on this, but this bunch was to be sent to the schools for meat programs. I felt it was totally unecessary to mistreat sick or crippled cows like this for fun is why I posted it up, it shocked me that humans can be so cruel and stupid, but guess we will never rid is such ignorance with animals.?

I had the impression that it wasn't so much a health issue as it was punishment for the violations. That video that sheplover had posted showed some of how those animals had been treated. Peronsally I would not make the choice to be vegetarian, but I think we owe it to those animals to treat them as well as we can while they are alive and kill them with as little suffering as possible.

Instead of recalling shut down the "refinery" and fine them a years cost.

Just USDA business as usual :(

It's kind of silly to do a recall now and waste all that meat since this has been going on for two years. In that two years there haven't been any cases of illness reported. But that's the way the government works.

It's disgusting.

I'm about ready to take up hunting....Much more humane. The animal is free and happy before it gets killed and then it's over in an instant.
