So today I had to go a run to the feed store. And usually there is atleast one other person in their with a dog or two with them. I had Raisin with me lol. Anyways I see this woman with a medium sized dog more on the smaller side. Sable and white and with a very obvious Sheltie head. She was probley one of the cutest friendliest dogs I had ever seen. Her owner and I got to talking and she said she had a male Dobe at home and commented on how beautiful Raisin was. I thanked her and then commented on how cute her dog "Sadie" was and I asked politely if she was a sheltie mix. She just shook her head and told me no that Sadie was a purebred smooth Shetland Sheepdog. When I asked where she got her she told me she bought her from a small ma and pa business type pet store. I didn't want to upset her by telling her that her dog may not be purebred. But honestly I couldn't have known that myself. I know very little about the breed but I know I have NEVER heard of a smooth coated Sheltie.

Could someone with knowledge of the breed fill me in? Does this coat sometimes occur in litters?

Sounds to me like you were right- this is not a purebred Sheltie. Either that or the coat is a serious fault. There isn't much you could do to a Sheltie to make it not be cute though. :p

Far as I know there are not smooth shelties. Most likely a mixed with a breed of dog with a short coat that may have Sheltie like characteristics.

For some time there were unethical breeders mixing Aussies with Border Collies hoping to get a dog with more eye when working stock. Some BC's look alot like Aussies but the way they move and the way they work stock is quite different. Thankfully they were able to weed out these breeders and identify which breeding stock had the BC strain in them and not allow them to be registered.

I know it doesn't have papers from any US registry that's real. I have heard of brindle shelties, but not smooth ones. I suspect it's a sheltie bred with a small smooth collie. And I bet the poor lady paid huge bucks for her mix.

I saw a goldendoodle at an agility event recently. The lady was so proud of her $1,000 mixed breed. I sure felt sorry for her.

yes it's amazing how people will pay a lot of money for a cross breed. there was a dog in the Add's selling for £1500, it was a Husky German shepherd cross, they were selling it as a wolf dog. I would not pay that much for a pedigree, let alone a cross breed

A Smooth Sheltie? Hrmmm... that's a new one to me too. I have to agree, sounds like a mix or a fault. That's why pet store doggies are a Darwin's Grab Bag gamble and a bad deal.

I agree, no smooth shelties. BC's and Collies come in smooth, but not shelties. Could have been mixed with smooth BC, that'd be closer in size.
