For all those easily embarrassed look away now ;)

A bitch will come into season every 6 (ish) months. My girl's very regular but some are all over the place. They bleed for 3 weeks, the second week - when the blood changes from dark red to a fresh pinky colour is when she is most fertile. She will then bleed the rusty colour again for another week.

What to expect? Difficult to answer! Apart from the mess (blood everywhere!) they can do allsorts of weird things. Maggie goes off her food and is much more cuddly and shy-girl. But some can be more aggressive, more hungry.....bit like us girls really - instant arguement, just add hormones ;)

What to do? Keep her well away from entire males. The urge to mate will be a whole lot stronger than any training put in place. She may well even try and run away to get to a male. Unless of course you want puppies....

for when a dog is on heat you can get special pant type things to stop blood getting everywhere and also to stop other dogs gettting to her.
from katey
here is where you can get them from.

beaux (my friends lab) mated with her female lab (arrow) through the special pants. I reecomend papmering your pet during this time period, with her own special blanket to lay on (and bleed on.) wash it once a day (or every other day.)

if u mean when it is giving birth i know what to do my girl dog ones had puppies so i know what to do. what you need to do is make a little cozy bed for her. then you have to just let her rest and sleep for a while so she can feel relaxed and when the puppies push she will not make any noise but when the puppies are out they will start to sweck and u will know she had her puppies but u have to ask a vet if she is pregnet. she may and u wiil have puppies

my Rotti pup has just had her first season and she was on the lead for the 4 weeks a couple of days before she started I could tell she was comming into season for she was licking herself all the time and weeing every 2 or 3 mins. when we were out so I started walking her when there was no dogs arround. It is now 4 weeks later and she was off the lead for the first time yeasterday, poor little thing she hated being on the lead but she is only a puppy herself and I dont want her having pups. There was a big Lab outside looking for her on Friday so I kept her on an extra couple of days to be sure. I will have her spayed when she is about 1 year old she is 8 months now so will not come into season again . It is just a matter of watching she does not get near any entire males for they are so determand they can be quite stropy. I still love having a bitch they are so loving. Good luck.

I think that if she is just going to be your pet and you are not planning to breed then she should be spayed and that will eliminate the heat problem, and helps prevent cancer.
