I was just thinking about my dane and how she is an old lady already at age 5. I have not seen a dane older than 9. Has anyone out there had an older dane and how long did they live?

Danes don't get to be very old. It sort of goes by size - smaller dogs usually live longer than larger dogs, and the average life expectancy for a Great Dane is only 8.4 years.

My daughter had a GD who died at 9 but she also had a GD who made it to 10 and a half. The two dogs she had were unique as that is a good age to live to - and of course she's now got a GD puppy LOL.

In the past month at work I've seen a 12 year old, two 11 year olds and one 14 year old great dane.
The oldest pure bred great dane I've seen was 16 years old.
I also had a 14 year old unaltered Irish Wolfhound who was a renaissance dog- preformed with his owners, who were gypsies. He presented DOA... died after he did his last show.

I am still fairly much of a newby when it comes to dog owner ship so my 2 cents may not be worth much.
I think if a dog gets plenty of exercise, good nutrution, plenty of loving and good healthcare that dog will tend to live longer.
just like humans in fact.
We tend to live longer if we have these things too.
Of course good genes and good luck help too. :D

I haven't owned a great dane, but last time I was in the vets with Simba I sat next to a man with a gorgeous dane puppy. He said he'd owned them for 40 years, and that he'd had two get to over 12 years old. So there is always hope!

I used to know a Great Dane who was 11, and he died in March.
