This is 10 week old Rocky. His mother is a golden retriever/lab mix and we think his father must have been a doberman. Please let me know what you think.

Welcome to Dogforum.org. :)

I would say Doberman or Rottie. I would need to see a profile like Skunkstripe. :)

He's 12 lbs but I wouldn't be able to get a profile shot until the 28th (working out of town) but thanks for the input everyone.

Well if he is 12 lbs at 10 wks, that means he should weigh about 50 lbs full grown. If you know for sure that mom is GRT/Lab (both of which are large dogs) then I think that dad must have been a small-medium sized dog, something more the size of a Border Collie and not a Dobe. I have no idea what he could be, after you get three breeds mixed in it is hard as heck to figure it out.
Cutie, though, good luck!

Thank you all so much for your input. Something about dog lovers that make you feel so welcome! :)

Pictures like this are the only reason why I lean toward doberman. The markings on his paws and face line up exactly with this picture. Does anyone know of any other (possibly smaller) dogs with similar markings?

Hi Rocky,
As hard as it is, don't do by the markings. If you want to know how misleading they are, check out this site:
http://www.woodhavenlabs.com/mismarks.html
There are pics of a PB lab that more than likely would be incorrectly identified by most humans as being mixed with Rottie or Dobe because of the color.
We humans tend to go by color, and color in dogs is one of the most unpredictable and unreliable traits when mixing and matching. If possible, go by

1 body size and shape
2 muzzle shape
3 legs and paws (large or dainty, does dog walk flatfooted or on tiptoes)
4 type of ears
5 personality traits

Try hard to ignore color. The best thing to do is to imagine an outline of your dog in black and white.
Now if you want to see something else pretty wild, here are pics of three-way mixes I have. Hannah (black and white ) and Hope (brown and white) are sisters. Mom was a mix between a black Lab and a Golden Retriever. I happen to know what dad was and I can tell you he was a purebred and he was not a Dobe, he was a German Shepherd.
As hard as I have tried to learn how to identify mixes, there is no way I would have guessed that one, although the black and white one would have been even harder.

have you thought about a manchester terrier cross with something, literally a miniature dobi, http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g106/hennaly/mm.jpg

To me he looks Dobe and Rottweiler mix for sure due to the color, smooth coat, ears. He is not Retriever as he has no shaggy hair. He is nice and smooth like the two I mentioned, cute sweet boy he is I can guarantee you that.:D

Skunkstripe, thank you so much for your post. That site you gave was very informative.

Well I guess now it's back to the drawing board. We know he's definitely lab/golden retriever but i guess now you're saying he's too small after 10 months to have been mixed wit ha larger dog. I guess we'll have to play the waiting game to figure out how large he'll be. I just wanted to get some sort of heads up as to where you all thing he'll end up.

Thanks again everyone!
