Mines about 3 years old, I never attempted taking him to a pond, not sure if they are good swimmers or not.. Mine hates to take bath's and doesnt like going in the rain so I'd guess he wouldnt like swimming much..

I don't see why he couldn't swim. My irish water spaniel hates having a bath but when he goes to the beach or in a pond you can't keep him out of the water.

Good luck

My guess is that if he had to he would, but that he might not enjoy it that much. Probably it would cool him off a lot so only on really hot days or if the wter is very warm.

All dog can swim if they have to.If your dog has a very favorite ball that floats and he normally retrieves,on land, then, you should be able to teach him,to swim.My mom has a dackshund that loves swimming but she had to be taught.Go to a shallow lake or river that is clear, first send the ball close to him and then further away until he swims and treat him a lot.

with my golden retriever Lilly, she LOVES to takes baths, running though a sprinker and going swimming. ( tipical golden )

just whatever you do, dont push your dog into doing something it wouldnt want to do. it will just make it worse... maybe try going into the water with him/her and just really watch your dog cause it could drown cause of the size... good luck

Before you try swimming as all dogs cannot swim right off nearly drown my Boxer when he fell into the swim pool to the bottom. Put a life harness or dog thing on her then put her in a creek or small area with long rope attached to pull it in if she does not truly like it. This will keep her from going to the bottom as they do trust me. They say all dogs can swim and I believed that until years back my dumb Boxer jumped into the pool after us and sunk. Be safe with your pet, take no chances till you know please............

My oldest dog still young at only 1 likes to just stand in water up to his belly. When we go to the park he is straight in the water but doesnt swim. He's only ever once had a little swim, although the other day we went to a different park and he went running up this hill, then we heard a big splash!! He came running back to us soaking! It was in the summer he first went in the pond, cooling off i think. If you Chihuahua wants to go in he will he might just paddle tho.

hehehe....sorry I have to laugh. I had a Boxer and can picture him doing the same thing.:D
How about trying a kiddy pool first for your Chiuahua, seems safe.

My auntie used to have 2 chihuahas.
One of them would just sink but the other was like an olympic swimmer. His legs would be going before you put him in the water.
I once had a dog that wouldn't go in the water.
My dad was convinced all dogs could swim so he just put him in the water one day. He sank like a stone and my dad had to jump in fully clothed to rescue him. Served him right!

Luckily both current our dogs can swim. Buster only when he has to but Kismet jumps in anything regardless of depth. Springers have to be rung out, especially the ears. She's like a sponge.

Musky and Pike are fish, can get relativly large and have sharp teeth.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Musky

Muskies prey upon anything small enough to fit inside their mouths, from other fish, crayfish (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crayfish) and frogs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frog), to ducklings (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duck), snakes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snake), muskrats (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muskrat) and other small hapless mammals (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mammal). Their bill-shaped mouths are large with many sharp teeth; muskies engulf their prey head-first, sometimes in a single gulp. Although the animals are capable of swallowing something up to 45 percent of their total length, selection must be made carefully. Muskellunge are sometimes found dead with their last meal lodged down their throats, apparently having drowned. Large Muskies have been known to eat fully grown ducks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ducks).
