Banner Ads / login problems

Hi Since the forum has made some changes Banner ads are on certain pages. They wern't there before the changes, so are they supposed to be there? Also this other problem has been around since I joined the forum. When I get a email notification for a topic Iam watching or I have started. Iam loged in no problem. But if I come to the forum directly via www.dogforum.org I have to sign in, is this normal even if I tick the remember me box I still have to sign in each time I visit via the site. Email notifications like I said are not affected by this. Cookie problem maybe?

As far as I know, banner ads have always been on the home page. They alternate with the "Ads by google." Also there are ads in a bar on the right side.
With the logon problem I'm not sure, but it sounds like it could be something with your cookie settings. If you allow session cookies only then what happens (I think) is that the "persistent" cookie that remembers youi so you don't have to sign in is disallowed.
If you post what browser and version you are using we can hopefully get this resovled for you. :)

HI Skunkstripe At last I have my browser details ( I would be late for my own funeral LOL) The user agent is: Mozilla/4.0 ( Compatible MSIE 5.01 Windows 98: LInux 2.4.2 - mvista_01) [ Netgem version 4.6.23 (c) ; I-Player ; netbox; btdigitaltv] HTML commands canot only be set up to detect high encryption settings for the Netgem set top box, but also to serve as a filter to detect the web browser for a Pc or a set top box. So maybe the Dog forum will be able to add extra code to detect the Netgem I-Player and remember the cookie if it's still active
in the internet cache. Maybe a permant or long term cookie could be added to the login page (as it expires fairly quickly) when visiting the forum direct via www.dogforum.org HTH Skunkstripe.:)

Hi Bigboy - thanks for the info. This is something where the code would have to be changed. That is well beyond what the moderating team is able to do. I'll pass it on to the folks who have admin capabilities.

Drats, I was hoping that this had been resolved, sorry about that. We are having a hard time reproducing it since no one among the staff has a comparable browser. And I can tell you that sometimes if I log in using IE 5 from one of the older machines I have at work (win 98 as opposed to Win 98 SE), I cannot access many of the features.
Since one of the site admins will be along before too long to take care of changes to the finalize the Forum Director hopefully we can get input from someone who really knows about software issues.

Can I make a suggestion? The problem lies ( I think) if you vist www.dogforum,org and you login and check remember me it doesn't seem to remember me for very long. Prehaps the login cookie needs to expire 2 weeks or a month and not within a few hrs. This could be changed by changing the time for this cookie or have a drop down menu near the login area and when the drop down menu is selected. It coud have a few options like exit when I leave Dogforum/ 1hr/ 24hrs/ Forever the forever one would necessarly mean till the end of time but till the login cookie has expired say within 2 weeks or a month.
I can on my Set Top Box clear my cookie cache but then I would have to login again when I recieve a email notification from a thread/topic that I have subscribed to. This wouldn't be a problem as I could login again and I could then reply and start new threads. Like I say it seems to be a timed cookie problem when visiting dogforum directly from my www. address page and not through email notifications.
