View Full Version : Too young to bathe?

Hi all
Harvey is the newest addition to our family. At just 12 weeks, our staffordshire bull terrier is already in to all sorts.
We wondered if anyone feels if there is an age limit to giving him a bath, ie, can he be too young?
Cheers

He should be fine to bathe, just use a mild puppy shampoo. :)

My corgi got a bath at 12 weeks, but he also had a bath before I got him. I just used tea tree oil shampoo.

i've always heard that you just shouldn't use any sort of flea/tick shampoo at that age. He is sure old enough for puppy shampoo though :]

Mine were bathed at 9 weeks old, as long as you use a mild puppy shampoo then theirs no reason not too.

I work for a dog groomer and you usually want to wait until they are at least 5-6 weeks old. Only use mild shampoo...never flea shampoo until they are older.

by this i meant when buying a puppy in, ie 8 weeks plus not breeding one of my own.

My breeder give my dog a bath at 6weeks. You can get this great puppy shampoo at pets at home but it smells like talc n powder its loverly can't remember what its called buts its very miled and cheap too.

I gave mine a bath as soon as he got home. He stank real bad. He was in the run with all the other pups and had been rolling in who knows what?
I guess i should have waited, but we hate stinky doggies. :wackosmiley:
Tell me I didn't scar him for life!!!:ohno-smiley:
BTW, he is three months old!

i think you did the right thing in your dogs interest, if they have brought nasty smelly stuff with them then i would get it out the fur with a nice mild puppy shampoo, and im sure your puppy will not suffer for it in fact he probably feels much better. I think we just need to make sure they are dried properly.

Hi all
Thanks for all the advice, its nice to know all this support is at our fingertips. We gave Harvs a bath and tho he wasnt too impressed this time we got the feeling he didnt dislike it. We used a mild puppy shampoo and he is absolutely fine, so dont worry Pauline 46
