If a proposed policy is adopted by the Livingston County Board of Commissioners tonight, certain breeds of stray dogs picked up in the area will be banned from adoption and might face forced euthanasia.

American Staffordshire terriers, American bulldogs, pit bull terriers and American pit bull terriers found running loose will be put to death if they are not claimed by their owners within days.

When owners pick up their wandering pets, they will face fines and possible criminal charges.

Other animals determined to be aggressive would be subject to the same fate.

The move follows dog maulings that resulted in the deaths of two Iosco Township residents and a horse in Handy Township.

What do you people think about this?

I don't think it's right. Any dog can get loose - and the owner should not have to pay for it with the dog losing its life. If someone is repeatedly letting their dog roam around then they need to be fined - the more often it happens, the more the fine. And of course if someone is letting a nasty dog roam around that is not right. There does come a point where the town or county needs to step in if an owner is being irresponsible. But breed specific euthanasia isn't right.

They already do it in Virginia...
They basicly told me that if I didnt keep Missy her chances of survivol was slim to none.. and we all know what happened...

I feel it is horrible.. I feel that eachdog should be evaluated. granted dogs like Missy (being hyper pup, nippy, barky) would porlly not stand a big chance in the test but at least a few more dogs would get pardoned.. *sighs*

That's sad, and makes me REALLY mad. I am GLAD we have SOME of the laws we have here about wandering dogs.

Why do people always pick on these type of dogs, I know people can make some dangerous but they shouldn't treat all these dogs the same way. One of my mates family rescued a golden retriever and it went for and attacked a member of the family after they had spent the day with it and were just sat there stroking it, after it had bit the person two or three times before the dog was took separated from the person they took the dog to the vets to get it put down for being unpredictable their vets said they wouldn't do it because it was a retriever so they are placid dogs, the next vet listened to them and put the dog down. If this dog was a 'dangerous breed' they would have been put down for no reason at all like these strays.
