My husband and I adopted a puppy last week and have started to crate him for a few hours every day. Problem is, he won't stop crying and whines the whole time. We've only crated him 3 times but he is not getting any better, maybe even worse. Is this normal?? How long does it take for puppies to get use to the crate??

seriously just ;leave him and dont let him out till he stops if you let him out while he is crying then he will never stop. so just leave him and ignore him goive him something to play with and then just leave him and when he stops crying let him out or give him some attension.

It's normal for puppies to object to the crate. Try to keep her busy in the crate...A kong filled with treats is sometimes what it takes to keep him occupied. I fill mine with peanut butter, kibble, wheat germ, treats, yogurt, green beans, carrots, etc. and then freeze it to give a few hours of enjoyment.
You may have to just let her work it out, much like a human baby. It is painful (and deafening) to her her cries, but eventually most dogs learn to love their crates.
Good luck!

Thank you for the responses. I'm glad to hear it is normal for a puppy to cry non stop when they are first crated. Thanks again!:)

Try putting a cuddly toy and a small dog bed for him to cuddle up in to make him feel secure, also give him something to chew on a nylon bone is good. Put his cage whare he can see you and put him in it to sleep at night he will soon get used to it. Good Luck and let us know how you get on.

Thanks for the advice. Our puppy sleeps in our bed at night and will stay in his crate during the day. I'm putting him in the crate a few hours a day to get him use to it. Hopefully he'll be ok!!

When Mojo first joined the family I started crating him at night. He was a whiney butt also but by night 3 all was fine. I found that covering his kennel with a sheet at night helped him feel more secure because it was not open to all the sounds at night that go on. I think it gave more of a den feel to it and of course he had his pillow and blanket and teddy bear too.

Sounds as if you are making progress, keep it up, I know it's hard listening to them crying but sometimes you have to be a wee bit hard to get the message over. Good Luck.

How big is the crate you have him in? When we got our dog, we were told that you can get a divider type thing to make the crate smaller. This should stop him from peeing inside of the crate because dogs have the instinct not to potty in their "den". We were told that if the crate is larger in size sometimes a small dog or puppy will do potty in the front or back and use the opposite end of the crate for the sleeping/den area. We never had this problem with Kovi, so I don't know if it will work, but it's a suggestion.

Take him out for a wee just before you put him in and give him a toy and a chew to keep him amused as soon as he comes out take him out again and if he has a wee lots of praise and a treat for getting it right, do this every time untill he gets the hang of it and if you see him going to do it in the cage shout no get him and take him right outside. Good Luck.

you have to ignore the cries... if you listen then he will think it is a way of being released from the crate.
