This is odd, but how much do you feed your dogs a day or do you let them eat all day when they want?
I have 2 large dogs and they eat 2 cups of food each day, plus they get a few treats. Every other day we give them an egg. They eat at the same time everyday too, 6pm.
I always thought that was too little for our big dogs. But thats what they have been eating since hubby got them and they are not under weight or over weight. They both came from a shelter years and years ago before i moved in.

snoop isnt greedy in the slightest and eats very daintily, it was funny to see jack the lab come round and demolish his water and food in a matter of seconds, he has approx 1 1/2 cups of food a day, treats at training time and his biscuit ball once a day, on sundays he willl have some meat and gravy which is his weekly treat. he doesnt seem to be putting any weight on at all:)

My black lab Max gets 1 1/2 cups of food each meal. Is that appropriate? He is pretty low energy, and he eats twice a day. he is almost 2 years old. :)

I have a 26 pound beagle that get 2 cups a day fed in the evenings. She also usually gets some treats in the day. If she gets a lot of treats I dont feed her the full 2 cups.

I feed 2 cups cuz that is what the bag says and she is not overweight. But it seems like some of you are feeding the same amount to larger dogs...am I feeding too much?

It just depends on the food. Some foods have a bunch of fillers and less nutrients per cup, so you end up having to feed more of it. I feed Eevee Canidae, and it's more nutrient-rich and has less fillers, so that's why I'm feeding my 57 lb dog as much as you are feeding your 26 lb one lol... It may seem more costly, because I'm paying $25 for a 15 lb bag, but in the long run, I end up feeding her less food, so the price evens out.

Another thing I have learned is to never go solely by what the bag says. It's inaccurate and it really depends on the individual dog and how active they are. I consulted a certified nutrition counselor to get Eevee's proper nutrient intake calculations per day.

I am feeding Nutro Lamb and Rice. I probably could cut down a little bit. She is by no means skinny. But she is not fat or overweight either.

I used to feed Nutro. The bag called for too much food in Eevee's case. Most bags do. On Solid Gold's bag, they wanted me to feed Eevee 3 cups per day... >O_o< So I never go by the bag but what a vet or nutritionist would tell me.

On Eagle Pack Holistic Fish Meal, I was feeding Maddi (between 75-80lb) 6 cups a day, any less and she looked way to skinny. I'm currently feeding 3.75 cups of Innova Adult, but I haven't been feeding it (again) long enough to know if this is too little/too much.

This is more than the recommend amount for adults, but, because, she's not yet an "adult" and still has quite a bit of filling out to do, I am following the Puppy feeding schedule that Innova gave for feeding puppies.

Mojo gets 1 1/4 cup 3x a day. He is fed Canadae. He is still a puppy so I give him a little more than recommended but in small portions since he is a food gobbler. He takes a nap for 1 hour before eating and plays with his chews and toys in his kennel 1 hour after to reduce the risk of bloat. Once he is full grown he will only get 1 cup 2x a day. Cleo gets 1 cup and Booby gets 1/4.

Like another poster said, it depends on the quality of food and the energy level of your dog. If you have a higher quality of dog food, your dog will require less to keep it healthy...lower quality, more needed. The guidelines on the back of that bags are merely that...guidelines. Only you can truly judge how much your dog needs. You can start somewhere around what the bag suggests and go from there. Give the amount you start feeding time before you decide to increase or decrease. BTW-some professionals suggest feeding your dog twice a day to reduce the chance of intestinal blockage. Most dogs do perfectly fine once a day, but a lot of active dogs get too hungry between feedings and will 'wolf' the food down, causing upset tummies. Again, all depends on your dog, activity level, and quality of food. God bless!!!

I feed Zoe 3/4 cup twice daily. she weighs 26lbs last time I took her to the vet (Feb 28). Bear gets 2 cups once daily and weighs 34lbs. Both dogs fair just fine this way. They're on Eagle Pack Original formula.

Link gets a combination of Solid Gold Wolfcub and FarMore Raw Frozen Buffalo Diet to get up to 1600 calories a day. About once a week, I nix the FarMore for a day and give him a beef knuckle bone to knaw on for a couple hours.

Could I just share this with you lot before I take my dog to the 'Vet'. Molly is a Cocker Spaniel bitch, she has been spayed. Ever since she was a puppy she has eaten her 'Poo' and just about anything going.

She is now two years old and I think quite skinny at 10 kilos, she eats 200 to 300 grams of dry food plus half a tin of meat (200 grams) per day plus numerous treats. The problem is, she is always hungry.

The recommended amount of dry food from the manufacturer is 100 grams.

She is lively, full of beans and in good condition.

Any constructive help would be appreciated.

Big dogs don't need as much food as some people would have you believe, my dogs don't eat much & their big & a good weight, although 2 cups doesn't sound much but I suppose it depends on how big the cup is.

My dogs each get get half a bag of raw mince (approx 375g) mixed in with a small cup of complete food & a blob of garlic puree for their morning meal & quater of a bag of raw mince (approx 187g) & a small cup of complete food for their evening meal. 3 times a week the evening mince is substitued with raw chicken legs, my male gets 3 & my bitch gets 2. And on sundays the evening meal is always cooked vegetables which they eather have with cooked chicken, cheese or pasta. Inbetween snacks are generally, bananas, apples & pigs ears.

By the way just to add, my dogs are Northern Inuits which are approx German Shepherd size at the mo & still growing at 13 & 10 months. My male currently weighs around 30kg ( 70lb) & my bitch weighs around 22kg (46lb).

My dogs get a large dog biscuit for breakfast each. Then they usually get a bit of a sandwich at lunchtime from us. Then their main dinner is at 6pm and consists of

Breagha: 1 1/2 cup of dry biscuits (or kibble to some) & 1/2 tin of moist dog meat
Todd: 2 cups of dry biscuits & 1 tin of moist dog meat

Todd gets more than Breagha because he is bigger than her and is more active so burns it all off.

Shankly eats as and when he wants to (I free feed). This basically means that his bowl always has food in it (I feed James Wellbeloved, some don't like it but it suits him) and he takes from it when he wants. He isn't a greedy dog so only eats when he is hungry and he only seems to eat what he needs and he is (in my biasist opinion and also the vets) in great shape

I feed my dogs all differently having 7 of them same time of day also. Dogs are creatures of habit remember so they get very annoyed waiting, as they are also good clocks. They know daily the time and start to stalk me, have tried to change 4 pm but they let me know. Some get 4 cups some mostly two males get 6 cups, in heat this is divided into 3 feedings a day along with plenty of fresh water always. Even in winter when out playing throwing the tennis ball I keep fresh water for them and they drink. They have huge appetites also. Working dog of good health do and should have.

Funny how you said your dogs stalk you around feeding time because my pups do the same thing.
Right now Becky get 1 cup of puppy chow, Abby get 2 cups of weight managment(this amount is only for now as her losing weight is a big priority.
And Madison eats 5 cups of puppy chow daily

We feed once in the morning - five cups dry kibble for black labs Betty and Barney (just under 70 lbs, and right around 100, respectively) - and two and a half for little Via (about 40 pounds). They get a few treats - usually plain cheerios (which they LOVE) - during the day also. And the occasional bit of rice or EVOO... Fruits, crackers, cheese.... We snack pretty healithily here and share when it's deserved. :D
They've definitely been enjoying the little tastes of whipped cream in the last week due to the influx of pie, iced cream and hot chocolate from the holiday....

Toyo( rotti X GSD) gets 1,1/2 cups dry food for breakie and 1/2 cup dry and about 1 cup of wet food for dinner, any more then that and she won't eat it.

I know that doean't sound much for a 35 kg dog, but thats all she wants.

Sophie( mini foxy) gets just a handfull of puppy dry at breakie and 1/2 cup dry and 1/2 cup wet for dinner. She however would eat until she popped so I make sure that there is no food just lying around.

I think alot of people like to feed what they bag/tin tells them that their dog needs which in my opinion is generally far to much

Odin my 12-1/2 year old who weighs about 52 pounds gets 2 cups of senior formula food a day with a couple of treats inbetween. He's at the perfect weight for his size. Cadence gets 1-1/2 cups of food a day to maintain her girlish 40 pound figure. They get fed half in the morning and half in the evening.

We feed Maddie twice a day. 3/4 cups each time. She also gets rewards during training daily and a weekly bone to chew on. If we train a lot (more rewards) or if she gets a biscuit during the day then dinner is cut down a bit.
She is a trim 32-34 lbs.
