I was wondering if you could tell me a little bit about your collie. Is it all true what they say about Collies. Loyal, gentle companions. What are some things I have to watch for?

I would love to hear more about the breed as I just purchased a collie pup. :D

Honey I do not own one now, but I have owned a long face Lassie collie I called Brigdet. She was gorgous long flowing coat and nice color, sweet loving. No health issues at all, we lived in Ohio then as a young couple with two young children, now I am the Grandma of this site at sixty eight years old.
Collies are great pets, go for it.:D

Hey, I own two collie crosses. The main thing I would have to say is keep your collie active! My first collie Mickey can drive himself to maddness if he is left to his own devices, Plus he helps my mam 're-dig' her garden lol - which she doesn't appriciate! I think it benefits collies to train them everything you can, Including tricks and agility :)
One thing to watch for, The herding instinct. I always worry when my dogs are off their lead when there are children around because it only takes one little nip to be called a bite to a child and that can cause serious problems if the parents get the police involved. My collie used to chase everything trying to herd it, Old men on electric wheelchairs where his favourite. So you need to enforce some firm training to try and discourage this behaviour because it can never really be taken out of the dog.

Good luck with your new dog! Although I would have advised you doing your research before buying a particular breed!

I grew up with collies, but now have a Sheltie and a Greyhound. (We had 7 of them, growing up)

Yes, they are extremely loyal, and are WONDERFUL around kids. (Ours ALL were.) They used to watch over us kids, and be like little mother's to us.

We had one that used to nurse the cat... and one that used to take a baby chicken to bed with it, in the garage. (They were all outside dogs, as I grew up.) She would just lick that little chicken, and love it... it was SO sweet!

They all waited at the end of the driveway, watching for the school bus to bring us home every day. Somehow, they always knew when it was close to time. (Our Sheltie does that with my children, too)

I would recommend one to anyone wanting a loving, loyal dog. We adored each one of ours.

I grew up with my family's border collie and he was just the perfect dog. Loyal, loving, great temperment, etc. He just loved being with us and was very well behaved.

I own a 7 year old spayed Sable and White Rough Collie girl named Sally. We got her before we were educated about the animal overpopulation, I will NEVER buy again, only adopt from now on.

She is the best dog anybody could hope for and has really converted me into a Collie fanatic. She eats a diet of half Canidae and half raw meaty bones. I make sure that I groom her coat thoroughly (over an hour) at least 3 or 4 times a week and give her a lot of regular excercise.

Here are a few pictures of my girl:

She's extremely cat friendly and loves getting all dressed up for the camera!

And Pauline46, congrats on the adorable puppy! You will not regret getting a Collie, they are a wonderful breed.

I feel very encouraged about having a collie. He is a wonderful pup. He is very attentive and loves to hang out with us. I really like that.

Hey Sally, those are great pictures of your Collie! You Groom your collie 4 times a week for an hour each time!!!! Oh my!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How often does a pup need to be brushed. Their fur is so short and fluffy...:D

I walk my pup 2 times a day, but he is still a bit fearful on the walk. Sometimes he is fine, other times he can't wait to get home. He practically chokes himself trying to get home. I am really trying to get him to relax and take his time..........any suggestions?

Do you have any neighbours that have a pup or a young dog that is friendly and playfull. What he might need is to know that walking means fun time with another dog. You're doing a great job with him.Maybe what you need is a gentle leader harness to stop him from pulling. They are great.

Oh yes, especially while she is shedding. I put a lot of effort into her coat. :D Rough Collie's coats require a lot of attention.

And Pauline, I would take goldenhovadoglover's advice about meeting up with other puppies/dogs, and definitely socialize your dog. When a dog is a puppy they go through a socialization period where it's vital for them to be socialized properly with all kinds of other dogs and people. Socialization is important throught the entire lifetime, but especially as a puppy.

If your dog is pulling to get home, try treating him while on the walk, or maybe walking to a park and having a play session with him so that way he'll associate walking with positive things and want to go out. My Rough Collie absolutely adores walking, and as soon as she hears mention of the word, she races to the door. :p I'm sure that with time your new pup will be the same. :)

I have a collie & he's the most wonderful dog anyone could possibly wish for. He's my seizure alert dog, so I take him to class with me as well. Just yesterday I had audition call-backs with the theater dept. at my college, and when I was done with the initial portion of the auditioning, I let him out of his vest & off his leash in the lobby since he had been tied to a table waiting for me outside the whole time. He milled around with the dozens of other students that were there, sat & watched them eat their lunches (he wouldn't dare to try to take their food though--he's been well-trained not to do that!), & stretched out on the floor while people he didn't even know rubbed his belly.
He is the most perfect dog I could hope for, so I'm incredibly happy that I chose a rough collie. He's playful & loves to run when he's outdoors offleash, but he's calm & gentle around people & indoors. Sheer perfection! =)

yes im with jade ,you really need to keep the collies mind active ,mine love ball on a rope they could run for hours chaseing it . exercise is as important to the collie as feeding it , do that and you will fall in love with the breed and probably have many collies over the years:)
