View Full Version : Another boxer question

Well a couple boxer questions, I'm still getting use to having one for the first time.
First off, are they all so gassy or is there a special diet I can feed her to reduce this problem? If it's just a breed trait, I can deal with it, but it is a bit embarassing considering my dogs go with me everywhere dogs are allowed, I just kind of pretend I don't notice it so it must not be my dog, lmao.
Second, I need to find a collar for her. I found out the hard way that she can slip a regular collar no matter how tight it is, so as a fast fix, I put on a spare choke I had laying around. But now I see that is rubbing her under neck raw because of her short hair. I was thinking maybe a harness? I want something on her at all times because of her tags, not only the legal tags since she's always out with me and needs those in case we are stopped, but also the tag that has my phone number just in case she finds a way out of my yard.
Third, does she seem to be in correct body weight?

She seems too slim to me because I can see her rib cage, although I don't see hip bones. The Vet seem to think she was ok in body weight, no worms, eats well enough, always has food in front of her. But I still think she needs a few pounds, maybe because I'm use to standard poodles who have a different body shape. If it helps, she's 18 months old, 22 inches at the shoulders and almost 47 pounds. Just kind of need to know if boxers should be on the slimmer side or not.
Thanks all for any advice.

She is in fine Boxer weight and looks great to me. I kept mine like that, he was a pet not show. It looks like the collar is some tight, I would not wear a choke unattened, I do not on my shepherds, they have nothing on. Rabi tags I keep in each ones folder as they used to just loose them on mixes I had years back.
If your going to walk the dog the choke if fine if you use it properly, but I think a nice collar of nylon fitted properly works good for walking also. Why do dogs need to wear a collar all day? I see no reason on my personal opinion.
It is a very nice looking Boxer you have and you might want to consider a harnass type for leading. I would not wear anything daily at home on the neck, I had a dog get hung up badly once with a cheap nylon collar catching on a hook or old nail, forget exactlly now.
sorry my computer is so slow I am ready to pich this Dell. I hate using it, and do not much lately it skips keys I hit also. Have a good day.:)

Oh about the gas it could be something in her food, I believe alot of breeds have gasy days, mine do. they stink me out sometimes and I put them out, often they need to clean out good to rid of it. Eggs cause gas in mine.
It comes n goes here, cannot remember when I had Boo my boxer if he was over gasey or not to be truthful.

she looks in awesome shape, you can always muscle her some and put on a couple of more but she looks really good to me..
When it comes to collars Id say martingale collar

it's a half choke, so if the dog pulls it goes tight, but it is wide and comfortable for the pooch.. :D

Her shape is fine, she does not want to be any heavier than she is... dont forget she is still maturing Boxers dont mature physically till around 3 ish...
You should be able to run your hands over her and feel her rids...
Boxers do suffer with delicate tummies.. the wind is a trait unfourtunately, but it could also be aggregated by her diet.. a good quality kibble should do the trick
As for her collar, I like to use half checks on my dogs... either leather or synthetic.... another good collar for a Boxer is... the Lupine combi (works the same as a half check)
Do a Google and you will find a supplier .

Please, keep her the way,she is cos she is stunning!.Not too fat,not too thin, just perfect!.I have heard that boxers could be gassy so you could add a tablespoon of yogurt to her meals,it will help with the gaz and digestion,in general!.
The food could also cause gaz!.
What do you feed her?.L

What is she eating now? Too many grains is usually the culprit. My 4 never have gas unless they are not feeling so well which is usually accompanied by diarrhea which is very rare.

Thanks for the collar suggestions, funny I never thought of the martingale collar or the half chock collars since I use them on my standard, seem like they would be just right for her as long as I can find a pink one, I have decided her color is to be pink, all my dogs have had a color, Chewie is royal blue. I decided on this because when I walk the two, everyone calls Chewie she and Tosh He, so I figure if I put Tosh in pink and Chewie in blue, maybe a few people will get it right.
I also had the same person who has the aggressive boxers tell me that boxers can not swim because of their feet. I guess no one told Tosh this, on our way back from her run in the pasture she jumped in the pond, not for the first time, and swam from end to end until she figured she was cooled off enough. Just goes to show, you can't listen to one person when deciding on a breed.
But to be fair, I really never intended on getting a boxer, never even considered one, knew a bit about them, but now learning even more. I just went to the pound to find a friend for Chewie and she seem to be the dog that best suited the job, mid size, energetic and some what young, if the dog was just for me alone, that beautiful Irish terrier would be here now, lol. But she has turned into a great dog, I have no regrets. And I know I said I went for a friend for Chewie, but I also knew the dog had to be a companion to me as well, fit into my lifestyle, so that was also taken into consideration when I chose her.

Yes they are gassy. If you feed a raw diet it helps eliminate this. Certain kibbles will likely cause more gas then others too. Also feed 2-3 times a day as Boxers have been known to get bloat, I was also told no hard activity right after eating because it could also cause bloat.
As far as collars I'm not sure, I always used regular flat buckle collars on mine. I walked one with a choker for sometime then switched to collar. They never slipped out. The only problem I had once was not really thinking and used one of those snap together collars with the plastic snaps and it came undone with walking.
