One of the so called boxer experts I work with swears that boxers can not swim because of their feet.

I guess no one ever told Tosh this. Tosh loves water, she has just about ripped my arm out at the shoulder to get into my pond and can't bypass any puddle without going through it. Well yesterday I decided our hike was to be around a local lake, it's a bit over 3 miles to walk around the whole lake. At one point she caught me off guard and ripped the lead out of my hand and jumped right into the lake, lead and all. Since I wasn't willing to go in after her, I had no choice but sit on the bank and wait for her to get done with her swim, fortunally she chose to stay right in that area, it is a large lake and unlike her, I can't swim, lol.

I think that, like humans, depends on the dog/person. Glad she kept in your area though. Does she smell of 'wet dog'? You are having a lot of adventures with her and Chewie has a playmate.

If you don't swim - do you go into the water (suitable water that is) with your pooches? I'd really miss out with Jake if I didn't go into the sea with him and OH. He's so much fun, especially when he dives down like a seal!

At least if she's swimming she's burning off some energy too.

when i used to have my white boxer, she loved going in the sea and having a swim...she never seamed to smell bad after...i just used to give her a good rub with a rough old towel...joys of having a short hair breed? ruby likes to paddle but not keen on going right in!

Your av is adorable and I had a Boxer that jumped into my pool when cover, he slipped through the slide trying to get off it and went to the bottom. I think some dogs need to learn not to fear water, Boo did but once in he liked it and did well. It just scared him to death almost. I had to pull him up from the bottom.

All dogs can swim, it is a matter of fear at first i believe. Your dog looks lovely honey.:)

The only dog that I have heard that can't swim is a basset hound, although my Honey has a massive fear with the water and has a panic attack if she goes in further than a paddle, whereas Diesel is the opposite and almost got hit by a boat when he went to far in

:D I can't wait for that so called boxer expert to come back to work from medical leave to let her know that not only can boxers swim, but they seem to love doing it, I know I sure have trouble keeping Tosh out of water. But then again, this is the same person who told me that boxers get aggressive once they mature, I really don't take her boxer advice too much to heart, just wanted to tell about Tosh's love of swimming.

Carole, funny part is that although Chewie is suppose to be the water dog and he doesn't mind getting wet, he has never tried to get in my pond. And truth be known, I never encouraged him to do so because of his coat and my pond is yucky, mud bottom, water weeds, snapping turtles, leaches, and all. With me being the nature lover, it's a very natural pond and while I do go in if I need to for pond maintance, it's really not one for swimming.

I know standard poodles are used for retrieving here in the states, don't know if they are in your area, but I think it's like most things, they have to be exposed to it and I guess Chewie has never been exposed to it. As far as me going in with Tosh, I don't mind lake water if I know how deep it goes, I can't swim and since Tosh jumped in an area I didn't know, I wasn't going to go in after her. Now if it had been the Ocean, I would have been in in a heart beat. I don't live anywhere near an ocean, but get to one every few years. I love the ocean, everything about it. I don't listen to reports of shark attack, warnings of jellyfish, don't even care how cold it is, there is no way you can keep me out.

my oldest boxer is 2 and just recently learned how to swim.. we have a pond and he plays in it almost daily ( supervised) but up until about a month ago he would try and walk on the bottom or something and he would flip head over butt and have to be saved... not sure when he learned how to swim one day he couldnt and the next he was swimming like a pro.. our younger boxer is 8 months old and is doing the same thing.. we got him a life jacket and it seems to be helping teach him to swim.
