Hi everyone.
I heard a while back about people making their own doggy deodoriser with bicarbonate soda in and essential oils...and there was other concoctions too that I heard...unfortunately I don't remember these well enough to actually attempt to make any! lol So, does anyone have any natural recipes for any kind of dog deodorant stuff?
Any ideas would be appreciated
Cheers

Hi Kate,
I am sure that a solution of bicarb would work, but maybe it might be a good idea to get to the bottom of why doggy smells bad? If it is really BO (and not bad breath or getting skunked) then there is a good chance that whatever you are feeding is responsible. Dogs don't normally stink unless there is a problem (really, I am not kidding!).
And by the way, welcome to the forum! :wave2:

Thank you! I'm glad to be here! :D
Well...I haven't had him long and I was told that the soft food I was feeding him would make him smell worse than if I fed him dry food. I'm really just learning about dogs, I did research before I got him but now he's here I'm just so worried I'm doing things all wrong! *bite my nails*
I've started feeding him Bakers Complete Weight Control because Cavaliers are prone to getting overweight, I mixed it in with the food he was used to and gradually decreased his soft food and increased his dry food and he wolfs it down now and seems to enjoy it more than he did the tins!
His breath doesn't smell particularly bad....just him!

Well we were all beginners once, and I must say that these boards are a good place to get help from people with more experience.
I know nothing about Bakers food so I cannot help you there. Maybe someone else knows more about it.
I think there are those who might suggest mixing in canned pumpkin to help a dog lose weight-the pumpkin tastes ok to dogs and does not have many calories. I also think it would not cause a bad odor.
But you are right about the canned food. I had been very good about feedinf a raw diet and got lazy recently and have been feeding some canned food. Now one of my dogs has BO. All the more motivation for me to get back to the raw!
Bakers isn't a food that i would feed as it is high in sugar full of additives and preservatives, you just need to look at all the colours in it, but that is just my oppinion though, you need to feed your dog whatever suits.

It's hard to know what suits...he'll eat anything and seems to enjoy everything just as much! Hehe!
What would you suggest in the way of dried food without additives etc?
Burns, Arden Grange,Nature Diet, I feed mine on Royal Canine which also do breed specific food.

First of all a dog cannot get overweight if you don't LET him get overweight. That's why you measure your dog's food according to what he/she SHOULD weigh and it's best to cut about 20% of the amount that is recommended on the bag. If the dog gains weight, you cut back the food, if he loses weight you add food until your dog is maintaining the proper weight.
Secondly... dogs only smell when they are eating inferior quality foods unless they have some other underlying health problem. By-products, rendered meats and fats, artificial ingredients, preservatives, colorings, chemicals, pesticides etc come out through your dog's skin and THAT is what causes the 'doggy' smell. Dogs should NOT smell. Their coats should not be dry or greasy. That ALL has to do with DIET. That doggy smell also is what attracts fleas and other pests.Dogs who eat a high quality diet rarely get fleas. I have 8 animals and not ONE has had fleas and I live in a very high prone area for fleas and ticks. None of my animals has any kind of body odor. They all smell clean and fresh, especially when they've been caught in the rain. Sure, they have an odor from the ground when they've been playing outside and rolling around but it dissipates shortly after they're in the house which is normal.
Put your dog on a better quality diet and monitor his feeding and you shouldn't have any problems.
