Firstly hi all I am new. Great sight.
Does anyone own a Chesapeake Bay Retreiver. If so does he or she show dominence to strangers and their own space. ie its domain. I know they can and have been used for guarding.

Hi Bearblue Ringneck and welcome to the forum!
I do not have a Chessie myself - I have a Golden Retriever and hubby has had Labrador Retrievers in the past. I do know that Chessies are no the happy-go-lucky everybody-is-my-friend type of retriever like Goldens and Labbies. It wouldn't surprise me if they would make good guard dogs.

Hi Bearblue Ringneck,

One of the teachers who used to work in my department had a lovely Chesapeake Retriever that I was privileged to know. She was a beautful dog but could be strong-willed and very independent. I know my colleague put a great deal of effort into socializing her and making sure she had plenty of exercise but she made a wonderful pet and was a pleasure to be around. The only real problem I was aware of was her shedding.

Thank very much, he does have loads of dog mates and loads of exercise. The social thing is paramount andI must admit the more he gets the better he gets. He is a great dog would not change him for the world. Thank you for your responce.:)

Hi Bearblue

Welcome to the forum from Jake and me in Rainy Scotland.

I love Chessies, haven't had the pleasure of owning one though.

I expect any dog will guard their territory, is instinctual. Socialisation is extremely important and the more the better. Looking forward to your postings and pictures.
