What does the "buddy list" do?

I added someone to my list who is on the other side of the Atlantic. I thought it might be cute to know when this member is online.
My question is, is the feature enabled? If so, how do I tell when my 'buddies' are online?

The best way to test out a feature is to try it out. :)

I do know that adding someone to your buddy list causes a + to appear by their name. You can use your buddy list to limit private messages such that you will only receive messages from your buddies. If there are other features of this setting, I'm not aware of them. If you find some more out, please post them here.
