Yes that is bad for the dog because dogs muscles are not designed for pulling weights if he wants to make his dog more muscle then he needs to take the dog for long walks to build up its endurance please do not try with weights it will tear his muscles and possibly damage them for life

I would agreewith k8ty. Lex enjoys swimming and I've noticed it's really developed her muscles. When we first started swimming she could barely hold her head out of the water and had to keep coming back to the shore to catch her breath and have the occasional choke. Now she swims so well her head and shoulders are out of the water.
The last swim she did on Sunday was a good 700m and she's got some nice muscles developing. How about giving that a go?

weight pulling is a sport but it has to be done with a club that knows how to do it.I would not attempt this by yourself. You need a special harness.how old is yr dog?.Swimming and walking are the best sports to start with and then jogging and bicycling.you start slowly and then do it longer and longer to build the stamina. You could also do abedience and dog related activities like, flyball, agilty.
I dont have a dog yet, i was just curious if it was bad for them, since i thought it might.
How about a toy attached with rope to a weight so they can grap and carry when they please?
Just curious on methods a old friend used, i dont yet have a dog but would like to know whats good and whats not before i get one, as my b/f might want to put these methods to use and im not too sure about them, its actually his friend that used them on his dog, well some one he knew anyway.
I would really apreciate all the help i can get.
I have not yet decided the breed.

yes, weight pulling is an activity that can be done, but only properly like golden said. You wouldn't want to hurt your dog, but it is safe if done properly. http://www.iwpa.net/ <~~~Official website

If I ever get a pit, I'd love to do weight pulling. It looks so fun!

I Have Thought About It With Duke, Since He Is So Strong, But I Want To Get Him Trained Very Well First.

Jakes likes the pulling games - he's very strong in his chest. I agree with Scubafee though swimming. I've always found swimming to be the best exercise, it isn't load bearing and its safe.
Weights with dogs - you know the guys who go to the gym and walk around muscle bound? That is because they only work their outer muscles - like their pecs or whatever. The same happens with dogs.
Unless you can work those deep muscles and its hard enough to get a weight trainer to do that let alone a dog who only understands about 200 words of english!
You would develop the outer muscles and the deep muscles would maybe atrophy.
Hope this helps
