Well, we will never know if Boots saved us and the puppies or not, but here is the story. Guess I better start at the beginning. Hunter and KayCee were about 11 weeks old and were outside with Buck. We do have a 6 foot wood privacy fence and I never worried about the puppies playing out on the patio along for a short time. It was Nov and lots of sycamore leaves everywhere.
Pups had been out about 30 minutes, it was getting close to being dark and I brought them in, but Buck wanted to stay out. I left the patio door open so he could come when when ready. Hunter & KayCee were busying playing n the livingroom. I heard a yelp and Buck came tearing in, just a tembling and ran and put his head in my lap. I saw the two holes instantly. One was lust below his left eye, the othe a little on down his nose. I knew at once it was a snake and to be that far spaced between fangs had to be a rattlesnake.
I called my vets emegency number and he said he would meet me at the hospital. At the time he lived right across from his hospital just outside of town (small town, only about 7000 at that time, up to 9400 now) and I rushed Buck over. My vet said the snake would have to be somewhere around 6-7 feet long to have that much of a mouth. Gave Buck anti venom and anitbiotics. However, we really lucked out. There was a scratch on Bucks lip and we think the snake struck and only grazed bucks lip, but shot most, if not all it's poison. Buck went after it again and that is when it got him in the face. He had very little swelling. Next day I searched the backyard good, even took wood pile apart--using a rake so i could stand back--and no snake. However, about 10 days later our neighbors were removing the wreckage of an old wooden shed that had been blown down by wind storm several weeks earlier and a rattle snake in it hit their dog in chest. We have always thought it was probably the same one that Buck. And we think it had come out of some woods behind us tha was being cleared for putting houses in.
Okay, fast forward to Jan. Hubby and I were walking the dogs, he had Buck and I had Hunter and KayCee who were about 5 months old We had walked them around to where this trail went behind where houses were being put up. I had walked them on that trail any number of times. The grass was about knee high on each side of the narrow trail. Well, suddenly Buck turned sideways across the trail in front of Jerry. Every time Jerry tried to get aroud him and get him going, Buck would just get in front of him and turn sideways. Fianlly I turned with the puppies and started back the way we had come and Buck all but pulled jerry around me and the pups to lead the way. Once he did that, I turned and started back the way I wanted to go, but Buck once gain pulled Jerry around me & the pups and then blocked the trail.
I then ffigued something was wrong, and i had a gut feeling he had picked up the scent of a snake and was preventing us from going towards it. We truend and went back out the way we went in. We will never know why he did what he did, but I truly believe he knew there was a snake ahead and was trying to keep us from getting near it. We walked that trail a week later with no problem. Did he save one of us or the pups from death or injury? We will never know for sure, but believe he did.

I have several stories about two women that were saved by dogs.
My own mixed breed now deceased , Bonnie, knew something was not right with my health. I was attributing my fatigue to working long hours as a visiting nurse, lifting heavy patients in the home. I had what I thought was indigestion. Never told the doctor even on my yearly physical. I was short of breath when running, thought it was the bitter cold as I and my three dogs jogged very early mornings. Well, Bonnie slept in the extra room , as she bonded with me from the moment I bailed her out of the shelter. BONNIE CONTINUALLY CHECKED ON ME EVERY NIGHT, WHICH WAS NOT NORMAL. Anyway I had an a cute heart attack 14 years ago. Bonnie knew I was ill .
I was one of the very lucky ones, as heart attackes kill more women than other diseases young and old. I was only 46. I wish I had heeded her concern.
