One of my boys has sort of a food obsession. He loves it, any type, mostly chicken, seasoned and cooked (haha). I never let my dogs in the kitchen when I am cooking, mainly because their hair will fly into the food (faster) and all that Akita and Shiba flying at you at once begging for food is enough to knock anyone on their butt!
Whenever I feed my boy (they all get raw) he acts like he's never seen food, like he can't get enough. He not only licks the bowl clean, but if I don't get it away from him, he will sit in front of it and whine until I do.
He is perfect weight and build, not fat at all except for his poofy hair.:p
Does this happen to anyone else? It's such an annoying pitiful whine.:wtf:

Bay wouldn't sit and whine but she ate like she'd been starved for weeks. we called her The Shark. She would start begging for dinner anywhere up to 2 hours early. dinner was 6, she'd start getting in my face at 4 at times. And on nights I spent on the phone to my best friend, she was especially difficult. Embarrassing to me that I had no control over her WRT dinner time. Then later around 9 or 10 she wanted a nighttime snack and would start driving me nuts then.

dang I miss that brach.

YM - barely notices. Such a lazy eater and never asks for it. You can tell if he's starting to pace that he's getting hungry but thus far he hasn't learned how to ask for it. I hope he never does. He does put his head on your leg if you are sitting in a chair snacking.

Jake always starts begging at least an hour before I feed him (and I feed him 3x a day as its better for his digestion). He eats as if its his last meal and then runs to the container where his food is kept and sits staring at it - willing it to give him so - in vain.

He also sits at the kitchen door when i'm preparing food as he gets titbits of veggies i'm cooking and you'd think he was waiting for a gourmet meal.

some dogs are greedy I guess - but then he was malnourised and way underweight when we got him.

If they were in the wild, like their ancestors - wolves, they would have to eat as quickly as possible else lose their meal either to a more dominant pack member or to some other competing predator. I suspect that with breeding we have bred some of this tendency out of some individual dogs. But that most of them are still as tied to their genetic roots as ever. In extreme cases, you get the "resource guarding" dog that will fight for it's meal.

It bothers me that this is actually a natural behavior that will get a stray euthenized rather than adopted. While it certainly has it's risks and I personally wouldn't want a dog that is rabidly "resource guarding" - i find it sad and a bit unfair that a dog can be a great animal in all other ways, but due to reverting to natural ways (usually because of being neglected or having been stray for a while) they will never get homes.

This doesn't fully explain Jake and Bayta with their begging habits that start(ed) so early in the day. That, on my part, might have been a small amount of conditioning. There were times when she made me so nuts with the begging that I'd give her a handful of kibble to keep her quiet until dinner time. But why did it start in the first place? I found the *&#*(&$* semi-annual time changes to be an annoying part of the puzzle. Mix that in with the seasonal changes in lighting and in the fall, Bay was certain that 4 p.m. was actually 6 p.m.
