We are looking for advice specific to our treeing walker coonhound breed. We adopted her from a rescue group. Most advice we've read about these dogs has to do w/using them as hunting dogs. We don't hunt and live in a small city. We are both runners and have started running her. Her coat is very short, kind of like a dalmation's. We also know it's a dog common to the South, but not the northeast where we live. Will she be warm enough running this winter? I've never had a dog who needed a coat, and am hoping she won't either. Anyone familiar w/coonhounds or other very short haired dogs and frigid weather? Any other advice about nutrition, training, grooming, etc for this specific breed? She'd 1 1/2 yrs. old.

Well, If He Is A Short Haired Breed, He Does Not Have An Undercoat, And He Will Be Cold. So, He Might Need A Sweater At Least.

I know they are sure of the hunting breeds, but do not know how good a house pet they make. I am sure if it gets enough exercise it should be fine. It will need a coat and maybe booties for it feet.? Very fine short haired dogs must have protection more than they can give themselves. Good luck with your new pal.:D

I would have thought that if you are actually running when you are outdoors the dog would generate enough body heat through the movement not to need a coat. Would be different of course if you were just walking or the dog was left outside.

I own 3 short hair dogs and in Kentucky where we live it gets a bit nippy out in winter so they wear coats and sweaters.

Welcome to Dogforum.org . :)

I have two Dobermans and they do ok in the winter. We have coats for them and doggie boots for when it is really cold. It gets extremely cold here in the winter.
