thought this might be an interesting thread to do

on my golden i use either a flat collar with 6 foot leash or a slip leash
with my lab i use a chocker chain with 6 foot leash or ship leash

Nothing! Oakley does best off leash, makes her listen to me more. I have a running leash for her. It clips around my waist. I hardly ever use it, i just walk her around my neighborhood.

i voted other because there was no choice for multiple things, i use a different thing for each dog, as the each have their own problems. i use the gentle leader on riken, the martingale on rippy and the flat nylon collar on sable.

Martingale on Big, harness on Little. :)

I voted other because most times the boys are on their dogmatic headcollars and leashes and sometimes on an ordinary collar and lead.

Angel is on a dogmatic headcoller that I also attach to his half check coller & Misty on a half check coller both with very short metal leads with padded handle.

I also voted other.

I use a choke chain, but its not chain, it's fabric.

And I never actually use it to "choke" him, its just a reminder for him that when he feels it tighten, it means he's stepped too far ahead of me.

I don't like flat collars, he had one on him from the rescue site that just totally ruined the fur around his neck, and it took forever for the fur to come back in nicely.

I had to edit, I know in my avatar there is a metal choke chain around his neck, but that one is just one i used to slip on him when we went into the back yard because I was teaching him to go just in one area and I needed something around his neck to guide him to the correct spot if he started peeing in the wrong spot. At first I was just slipping on the cloth one before we'ld go out, but he always thought that meant we were going for a walk and I felt bad because after he would go to the bathroom he'ld be all excited and sitting at the gate and give me this look when I would tell him to come inside the house...lol

Martingales on my Greys.

My horses :D I walk/run my dogs when I go riding. When we are not riding they get to run on our acreage.

When we did live in the city we used a flat collar.

I use a harness if Jake's really fired up and normally a fabric collar with either a normal lead or an extending lead.

Nothing. mine run free with their buddies.

One doesn't require a lead, the other gets put on the extendable lead until we get to the park, then she's off the lead as well.

I don't know what half those leads mentioned are!

Cindy has a harness since she's a guide dog. I also use a halti, since I find she concentrates more if she has that on. It also gives me a bit of an idea of what her head is doing, so I can tell if she's going to try to get something off the ground.

a head halti is a head lead aint it. i use to have a short lead and reggie pulled so much. we now have a longer head lead and he walks next to me.

Lola has a collar with our name and mobile numbers on it and a harness for walking as she is now pulling when she walks and it just makes it easier for me to control her. I am working with her to stop the pulling now before she gets to strong for me.

Georgia

Georgia wears a harness 100% of the time when we are walking/running or in public. She has a regular collar but that's only for her tags.

We originally started with the head harness (Gentle Leader) because she pulls so much, but after one of her first vet visits we found out she has a weak trachea (or is it larynx? I can never keep it straight).

Anyway, that's a long way of saying our choice of walking gear is dictated by Georgia's medical needs, not necessarily by what we would select on our own.

I use haltis attached to leads for Alfie the Lowchen and Bandit the Basenji.
I find the haltis are powersteering for dogs.... wonderful invention to stop constant pulling.... it's a pleasure to walk my two boys now.

sorry uh how do i start a new thread?

sheplovr
12-24-2006, 08:02 AM
I start my dogs as puppies on an about 2 Inch cut of flat nylon leash to drag around, I will pick up on it many times a day and work short periods of fuss, sitz, etc. It does not take them long to catch on and enjoy basics, so I often just use the smallest nylon choke from Monks of New Skete on the males and a flat small nylon collar for walking and working on the girls. No Problem!!!

I use a harness with Maggie, but it's the "no pull" kind that tightens up under the arms if she starts tugging. Her previous owner used a choke chain, but she just pulls against it full bore and ignores "corrections" if we walk off the property. With the harness she walks perfect.

We still use the choke chain for quick bathroom trips when I know she won't get distracted. I also use a 30 foot retractable lead when we go to the local public park to play fetch, but I never walk her with that.

Poppy has a harness and extendable, cos she is a devil for slipping collars. Kerrie has a halti headcollar and her now very dirty dogs trust harness.

I too voted other as I have multiple dogs and at times use different gear on the dogs depending on the environment we are going to.
Mostly I have Byron and Rio on Dogmatic headcollars and Mr Trevor in a Walkeezee harness. The pups I presently have just on flat collars.

Max is still learning leash manners. So I use a combination of things depending upon where we are and what our purpose is. For our training walks I use a flat collor with a training lead and I lure him with treats. He's the kind of dog that hangs behind instead of pulling forward - at least most of the time.

When we go to Petsmart it's a different story. I have him on a Sporn training harness, which works GREAT. If I don't use that then he pulls so hard he chokes himself.

The Sporn doesn't work for him while walking though because he lags behind instead of going ahead. When he lags behind, the harness activates with him behind me and he never gets going. He's stubborn!

I use a Gentle Leader for my TWC mix, Stitch. When we first got him he was a 60 lbs. 5 month old who loves to pull. He pulled like a husky, putting his full shouldar weight into his collar. Now with his Gentle Leader he learned in a matter of days to walk properly and is now conscious of the fact he has to stay by me, so he is now fine off lead when he used to just wander aimlessly(yet never actually run off) The down side to it is that nobody wants to pet him because they think it's a muzzle -growl-, but Stitch has started the fashion trend cause now I see the leaders on almost every dog in our town ^.^ -feels so savvy for starting a trend- So now he's a happy three year old that knows his way home if he gets lost.

What's a jazz collar anyway?

off-leash works best for me and kinko. he stays behind me for the duratrion of the walk and right when we're at the corner before my house i give him permission to run across the street to our house. i always check for cars and he listens...unless he sees a squirrel....

gemizza, to get your dog to quit pulling, pull the leash close to you, then step infront of him. this is saying "hey! im the leader, get behind me!"

I used to always walk with a flat nylon color and retractable leash...then I switched the retractable leash to a flat nylon 4 ft lead.

I've also tried a choke chain, but didn't like how it would get "stuck" in a position once pulled, so I recently switched to a nylon choker, I like this a lot better than the metal. Its not as prone to "sticking".

I also considered getting a "martingale" collar for Shelby, but couldn't find one at the pet supply stores, so I would probably have to get one online.

So now I walk with the nylon choker and flat leash.

I would say nothing, because I thought you ment as in leash, but I see now you ment collar. :) In that case, a martingale is usually on her and/or (yes, she sometimes wears both... LOL!) a flat buckly collar. :)

For my four I use several things.

For all four, on hikes I use harness. For walks around the neighborhood, Nala, Simba, and Mufasa wear regular collars (whichever they're sporting at the time.) Kiara wears a martingale because she is spooked easily and I don't want her slipping out.

sadly we are in the city so we use collars....plus Jay has a wee bit of husky in him...he likes to occasionally bolt.

Doberman's - you are SO lucky....that kind of my dream...to have a couple of horses and ride the trails with them and my dogs...that would be sooo cool....What kind of horses do you have?

Until I started obedience classes, I used a regular leather flat collar. When it was time to learn to heel properly, I moved to a prong collar for Beginner Obedience Class. Now, almost at the end of Novice I Class, I've switched to a regular choke collar.

I use a 6' leather lead for regular walks & obedience training, and a 16' retractable lead when it is time for Ozzy to just schmooze around & not have to be in heel position.

MyDogShelby
03-10-2007, 09:08 AM
For Shelby I have a flat collar and a nylon choke collar. I can switch between the two. I've also thought about getting a martingale because it is a "gentle" collar, but haven't found any in the pet stores.
I walk with a 4 ft flat nylon leash...but just recently bought a 4 ft, thin, "rolled" nylon leash and like using that one now. (Don't laugh...I picked it up at the dollar store for $1, and its really nice:) )

I use a slip leash in the house, and when traveling. When going on leisure walks, I socialize with a pinch prong collar so I can train at the same time.

Toby has always been on a flat collar. It's been tough....but we're winning with the pulling battle. ;)

MoJo
03-23-2007, 04:55 PM
Mocha is a weird one. With me, she doesn't pull, but with my Fiance Bjorn, she pulls like crazy. Around him she gets a bit too excited because she doesn't get to see him as often. So we have been training her a bit- halter/choak chain (We put an extra loop, from a key chain, through the choakchain so it doesn't get too tight though)

xcolbi
03-24-2007, 12:45 PM
Colbi has her regular collar and a head halter. She likes to pull sometimes (if she smells something and wants to go check it out, sees another dog or person close by and wants to go see them, etc.), and she has an extremely strong neck. If she didn't wear it, she'd rip our arms off if she pulled. :p

Man...that must be nice.

My son discovered that if you put a harness on our golden--she likes to play sled dog--of course he is on a bike not a sled--there is just something wrong with hearing...mush and seeing a golden retriever pulling a boy on a bike.

A jazz colar is a collar that looks like a belt with spikes on it. It's all leather and has a few attachments to it. It's a little confusing at first but it does work. I used it a few time on Lilly at my old dog obedience class. I would like to get one on my own but no pet stores have them.

Misty, Electra, Blair, and Perky-Martinagles and nylon lead, I have everything from 2 footers to flexies for leashes so no particualre size, just whatever I grab.

Happy-Martinagle coollar but NO leash, she does not wear a collar otherwise, just for walks, and she behaves better off leash. and I can read her like a book so if I know darn well something is going to set her off,m or might set her off I can jut grab the loop of the martingale, keeps her close to be and she cant slip out.

Rusty and Ripley-flat nylon collars, just cuz they are too small for martinagles to look anywhere half decent on them lol

My dog is a "puller" We use these things called "Walkies" I believe the appropriate name for them is sporn. Whatever you call them it is the difference between going for a walk and being 'towed' around the neighborhood. Here is a picture of what I'm talking about:

It won't hurt them if you pull on their necks. Look at Colbi; she's a Lab and has a strong neck. She likes to pull on her leash sometimes. You have to yank her back. It doesn't hurt them.

xsyd&palm
05-07-2007, 04:04 PM
Yeah but my dogs necks are tiny and not strong. I've tried collars and Palm was pulling WAY too much, so I held him back. And then a guy walked by and Palm started gagging. With the harness he doesn;t do any of that and he doesn't pull as much.

Used to be a sole believer in regular harnesses. Now our two big pullers are on Halti's til they learn their manners. Calypso still has a normal harness, but being 12 she doesn't take long walks. :D

When I started D.O.G on leash I went with the prong. But was able to move from it to a flat collar rather quickly. Now the only time he is on leash is when we are near the road. He has great recall, but it only takes one slip up, a small animal and a moving car to loose your dog. The rest of the time he is verbal only.

Syler
09-07-2007, 05:29 AM
Syler has lots of collars and leads.

I switch from a half check nylon, to a half check chain nylon.

His lead is an extendable one for walkies in the fields and my favourite at the mo is a police lead which is fabulous as you can alter the length.

I dont walk him in a harness as I want him to learn that pulling when he is wearing it is acceptable as when he is 1 we plan to work him.

Yes. I usually walk mine late at night so there's no one around to be afraid of the big bad Rotty. But like you, I carry a leash JIC.
