It's hard to tell from your description of the behavior. I walk mine twice a day, and they get 9 turnouts a day, besides.

I am gone from 7:30 in the morning until 4:30 in the afternoon.
He goes out once in the morning, then once more when I come home.
Then we go on an hour walk, he'll pee a few times (at the max 3 or 4 times, but mostly just marking) at the park, I don't let him pee while we're walking. I would hate for someone to allow their dog to pee on my front lawn because then every other dog that goes past that spot will pee on it.
We go home around 6 pm and then he doesn't go outside again until around 10pm for a pee.
He can hold it for longer, i've been stuck in traffic and haven't gotten home at my usual time, it was something like 7:30 so thats 12 hours, and he was fine...and he just casually walked outside to pee.

How old are your dogs?

We`re going three times a day for round 30min for a walk.

Then we start our training, Clara gets ound 30-45min and Marvin gets 10-15 minutes.

Weather like it matters.

When it is raining or realy cold Clara gets a Cape, Marvin gets one just ist raining very hard.

On Weekend we`re having one walk with more than 1-2 hours.

Twice a week Clara have to go with me an the horses. A normal ride needs 2 1/2 hours.

Germans are sometimes a little bit crazy :D

Hi mkmama3....how old are your dogs? Alot has to do with their ages..all the dogs I have owned have had full control of their bladders around age 2. If ever we go out on the weekends or have something to do that will take a long time (12 hours) I wouldn't worry about mine having an accident...but I would feel awful having too leave him that long by himself...even though I know he is sound asleep...guarding the couch!!! :)

Bella and Hamish get taken out for 3 walks a day usually - from half to and hour each time. About half this time is off the lead so they can run around and have fun. They are both small dogs 15 weeks and 7 months. I used to take the older one for good 2 hour walk as well at the weekend but Hamish can't keep up yet !

Plus they play loads ! so plenty of excercise and can go in the garden when they want. Bella usually also does a few hundred laps of the bedroom !

I am also lucky that I am usually with them all day every day as I work from home. The longest they will get left is 6 hours once a week or fortnight.

Me too and then people ask how can they toilet train them. Dogs need company and i certainly could'nt go without using the toilet for 12 hrs.

I agree Lassie -

Jake goes out once a day now for a walk - we go to the beach or beside the river spey (wow its really fast flowing and has burst its banks) but we walk for 2/3 hours.

He also has the freedom of the garden any time.

He's very anally retentive and he does his toilet 3 times a day - after each meal - I could set my clock by him. He hates his routine changed too - but he has coped with the move brilliantly.

12 hours is a really long time

Right now, my wife is home with Chuy, and (fingers crossed) he has not gone in the house for a couple of weeks (18 weeks old). My wife is still adjusting to Canadian winter, so she doesn't walk him everyday, but I usually do when I get home unless we have obedience class. On the weekend he usually gets 2 walks and/or a play session with my dad's dogs in a big backyard.

Hi mkmama

here in Germany the people go with their dogs 2-4 times a day, some more.
A few leav their dogs just in the garden, but Dog trainers here said also that it ist very important for the dog and the relationchip that dogs been never alone in the garden.

The training I do with my dogs is usually outside, but now, when it`s cold and very wet (for an Galgo-Espanol not realy a good weather) we go for a shot walk (30 min) and have our training inside.
Searching the dummy, retrieve shoes, towels or other things.
I think, an that is my firm belief, that it`s positive to assign your dog a job.
Retrieve anything, tidy up his stuff; retrieve the leash, key and shoes before you go for a walk and much more.

We have the the mission to bother our dogs like their natrual tendecy..
Every Dog is a hunter and every dog have the right to go for a hunt with his family.
hunt a Dummy, hunt a ball or anything, but i think its important that the dog have something to do.
Than like it matters if you walk 30 min 2-3times a day oder 3times for more than an hour..

my opinion..

twice a day usally for 30 min to 40 mins each time, or sometimes 3 times, he has one off lead walk where he runs round and his second walk is usally on the lead.

i know i should walk my dogs more but i dont, they have free roam of the yard and their doggy door that is always open, but being home alone most of the time with no car and 2 kids and 3 dogs its immpossible to walk my dogs daily especially seeing how i live on a road that has alot of trafic and no sidewalk to go on, so if and when i do walk my dogs its only when hubby is home and is able to watch the kids so i can take the dogs out, when i can get out with them i usualy walk for about 30-45 minutes with them i just cant wait to move into a new place so that i will be able to go on more walks with the dogs and kids (i dont let my kids play outside here unless we go to the park) there are too many hazards where i live and im over paranoid lol everything in florida is poisonus or harmful in some way, especially the tourists they are the worst!!! lol. so keep in mind it is important to walk your dog but there are times when you cant, so maybe you could do a doggie door so they arent always made to hold it in when you are away.

We walk Lincoln 3 times a day and then at the weekends he has one morning walk and a 15 minute walk at night and then during the day we go out and he has about a 2 hour outing, with some off lead walking, running after the ball (we are working on fetch at the mo) and he loves it.

I've been dealing with a cold since last Friday, but am feeling so much better today:) There's still snow on the ground, but I managed to take Shelby for a walk early Monday morning, and one earlier today. I will try to take her for a walk, weather permitting, everyday...and then as Spring rolls in, I will take her for a walk in the morning, and try to get one in for her in the late afternoon/evening, and mix in playtime outside too;)...and continue this routine through the Summer and Fall. I want to be sure that she gets her well deserved exercise...she enjoys her walks as much as I enjoy her company:)

Sparky gets 2 or 3, hour long walks in the day with my dad, he goes like cross country I swear :D, then a 30/45 min at night with me. I sometimes wonder if that is too much, since when I take her at night she often drags behind, whereas at the weekends when I do most of her walking, her first walks she will run ahead. She always does a ginormous pee when I first take her out, it's longer than a human pee i swear! SHe can't play in the garden at the moment, the fences have all blown down from the storms we had last week. or the week before, I don't remember when. Still, next doors dog comes in our garden. And leaves nice presents for us. GRRRRRRRR!

That's nice that you are able to devote so much of your day to exercising your dogs:)
